kbringardyou create networks ahead of time with the nova-manage network create command13:31
kbringardthen when a project requests an IP for the first time, if no network is assigned it'll assign it one13:31

uksysadminkieron, thinrhino, in a multi-node setup there are a few things to consider - in a simple setup, you can set your controller up (api, etc) with all components including nova-network15:23
uksysadminthis becomes your default route out15:23
uksysadminif that box fails...15:24
uksysadminin a multi-node setup you can have compute, network and api on each and they all individually route out15:24

thinrhinoyes, I have ubuntu 11.10 installed15:30

uksysadminso next setup is to install an "all-in-one" node15:31
gmithinrhino: you are confused because if you use Xen as a hypervisor then you have to install nova-compute software on a virtual machine running on top of your xen server; if you use KVM, then the nova-compute software gets installed directly on your host running KVM15:31
uksysadminwhich runs api,network,compute,glance,keystone15:31

gmimost of the development is done on kvm and everybody installs directly on the physical servers running Ubuntu + KVM, so there is no need for a dedicated VM on each host just to have the Openstack software installed15:32
uksysadminthen to scale out just install nova-compute on the others with the nova.conf copied from the all-in-one box15:32

notmynamerobix: more zones is better. you want to keep the zones pretty evenly sized. more zones means more places to put things in case of failure. also, assuming your zones have isolated failures, you'll also be better able to support failures18:02

notmynamerobix: you should make sure zones have isolated failures, but we've actually seen better performance for the clusters overall as we've grown then (more and bigger zones). depending on you deployment details, more zones normally means you'll have more servers sharing the load and therefor performance improves as the cluster grows18:06
*** robbiew has joined #openstack18:07
*** epim has joined #openstack18:08
notmynamerobix: since replicas are stored in different zones, large zones means that in the case of failure of an entire zone, you can have the zone's switch saturated pretty easily when the zone comes back on line (eg if a single zone has 20% of your entire storage)18:08

claygIs it possible to change the default security group for a project from having no rules, to having... well... some defaults?  (e.g. imcp & ssh allowed by default unless you create a new group or remove them from the default group)21:34
claygseems like different deployments may have different requirements here, I was wondering if it was configurable or if every new project just needs to figure out what they want in their default security group21:34

johnlhello. I've got a 4 node swift cluster, 2 zones, 2 replicas. I've shutdown one of the servers and I'm getting 503 errors from swift-proxy now on reading object (logs say ERROR with Account server 10.x.x.x:6002/vda1 re: Trying to get account info for /AUTH_test: ConnectionTimeout (0.5s))22:07

claygswift-get-nodes might give you some idea of the path on disk you're looking for - you could go and check both object servers to see if it's where it supposed to be22:17

dweimerjohnl: I don't believe there is currently a way to increase the replica count. Your forum post is correct. When running two replicas, writes will fail when only 1 copy is possible. The same will happen if one of the servers fails while data is being written. The in transit write will fail since it does not having enough replicas.23:09

notmynamedweimer: I thought SDSC was running a 2 replica cluster. true?23:53

notmynamejohnl: and the replica count is set at the initial ring creation. you can't change it after-the-fact23:55

notmynamejohnl: perhaps the quorum could be changed to "ceil(replica / 2)"23:56
