duonghqdo we have any special technical reason for choosing fluentd over logstash?04:46
sdakeduonghq yes04:46
sdakeduonghq the idea of our kolla-ansible arch is as follows04:46
sdakeheka->ES->kibana04:47
sdakewe are moving that  to fluentd->ES->kibana04:47
sdakelogstash doesn't scale04:47
sdakeand serves no valueable purpose in kolla's design04:47
sdakeits just overhead04:47
sdakelogstash-forwarder is deprecated04:47
sdakethe choices are a few - stick with heka (with is EOL), use logstash-forwarder (which is deprecated), use fluentd, or use ... ther eis something else04:48
tovin07logstash-forwarder -->> beats04:48
sdakeright the something else is beats04:48
tovin07<in new elastic stack (5.0)>04:48
sdakewe have decided on fluentd for the moment04:48
sdakethe point is we don't need logstash, and logstash-forwarder is eol04:49
sdakeall we really need is somethign to forward logs to es04:49

sdakeJeffrey4l - kfox1111 is 0.4.0 in a taggable state?04:53
kfox1111the log forwarder really needs a log roller built into it.04:53

sdakegodaddy has the same problem - perhaps harlowja has some ideas when he comes around21:58
sdakev1k0d3n what needs to happen I htink is the ability to pull the parent image from somewhere rather then rebuild it21:59
v1k0d3nfor small/med i can see why they would want to have the other depends, but if you're a developer or big corp...you'd use ci anyway.21:59
sdakev1k0d3n even medium businesses (100-500 employees) may use a ci pipeline22:00

SamYapleyea well then the build cache should cover that22:04

sdakeSamYaple tbh I can't remember what happend yesterday :)22:05

SamYapleand this isn't a problem22:06
sdake`how do we get rid of base?22:07

SamYapleklindgren: afaik kolla-ansible requires heka, at least as of mitaka22:17
SamYaplei dont think that changed in newton22:17
klindgrenwhat does heka provide?22:17
SamYaplelogging stuff22:18
sdakeklindgren heka forwards logs to elasticsearch from each node22:19
sdakekibana visualualizes the logs22:19
sdakeklindgren in other words, heka is for diagnostics22:19
klindgrenAnd if I am trying to slowly integrate kolla into an existing env and already have a solution for that?22:19
sdakeklindgren it could probably be made optional - but it is not at this point in time22:19
sdakeklindgren also we are replacing heka with fluentd in master22:20
sdakeklindgren (if it makes ocata) from my understanding22:20

sdakeklindgren keep in mind i just got up for a 6 hour nap :)22:21
SamYapleklindgren: the non-openstack services that get deployed by default are rabbitmq, mariadb, and memcached22:21
SamYapleand heka of course22:22
SamYaplei can't think of another one. might be missing one22:22
sdakeSamYaple i think that is correct22:22
sdakeheka is pretty much built in - the question klindgren - areou using elasticsearch at all?22:22
klindgrenso I already have rabbitmq, mariadb, memcached - is their a way for me to jsut supply what to use for config options to those and dont deploy them?22:22
sdakeklindgren you can disable everything but heka22:22
klindgrenwe use logstash to pump logs into hadoop and kafka which then splits them also into elastic search22:23
sdakeklindgren however your on your own for managing rabbitmq/mariadb/memecached in this case22:23
klindgrenIE - this is a solved problem for us22:23
SamYapleklindgren: yea, but youll need to _really_ understand the kolla config system for that to work22:23
sdakeklindgren you mean you use logstash-forwarded to pump logs into hadoop22:24
klindgrenwe also need to manage the rabbitmq config/mariadb/memachaced system per nova cell22:24
sdakeklindgren logstash-forwarder is EOL22:24
klindgrennot exactly. logstash parses the logs, and technially it outputs it to some crappy nodejs thing that parses it and send the correct messages to some internal company api22:24
sdakeklindgren heka is also EOL - which is why we are moving to fluentd22:24
sdakeklindgren each node has to run a forwarder22:25
sdakethat is what heka is22:25
sdakea forwarder22:25
klindgrenwhich then puts the messages on kafka, which then splits it between hadoop and ES22:25

sdakeklindgren some of our community doesn't have a holiday shutdown enforced upon them and will be around during that period22:38
sdakeklindgren i'd keep trying on that Q22:38
sdakeklindgren another option is the mailing list22:38
sdakeklindgren might provide a link to this irc log in the ml post so people know what was being talked about22:39
sdakeSamYaple cpuguy says --squash was just merged22:42
openstackgerritMerged openstack/kolla: Install solum dashboard into horizon image  https://review.openstack.org/40898122:42
sdakeSamYaple without the need for external tooling22:42
sdakeSamYaple although annoyingly probably in docker 1.13 or something later22:43
klindgrensdake, kk - will try just adding a conditional against centralized logging in the common includes for now22:43
sdakeklindgren the problem you have there is you need something to do the log forwarding on the nodes or captur ethe logs22:43
klindgrenI already have it22:44
SamYaplesdake: you are missing the point. --squash wont get what we want. it will help a little (and its already taged in 1.12 i believe)22:44
SamYapleexternal high level tooling is needed22:44
sdakeSamYaple just woke up dude - mind cutting me a break and explaining it to me :)22:44
sdakecool22:44
sdakethanks :)22:44
SamYaplei mean, its been pointed out several times by several docker employees (including the linked comment) that the Dockerfile stuff won't cut it for advanced projects22:45
sdakeya - I have read for putting images in the official docker registry - external tooling is out22:45
SamYaplenope22:45
SamYaplethats for _building_ in dockerhub22:45
SamYapleyou can push anythign you want22:45
SamYaplewe can't build in dockerhub anyway thanks to how we fetch tarballs and stuff22:45
sdakeyup aware of that problem22:46
SamYapletechnically build.py is external tooling22:46
sbezverkportdirect: ping22:46
sdakeSamYaple totally agree22:46
portdirecthey i was just about to jump into the whole build discussion :( whats up sbezverk? :)22:46
sdakeSamYaple thats what i'm getting at, our dockerfiles as is wont pass "inspection"22:46
sdakefor the official images22:47
SamYapleanyway. the whole point is we can get our images tiny. but we cant use the, by dockers own admission, simplistic dockerfiles to do so. at least not entirely22:47
sdakenot sure we want to head down that route or not22:47
SamYapleno reason to get rid of them, but we also dont need to be limited by them22:47
SamYaplewell, well never get them building in dockerhub. ive been down that path. its not practicle and will siginifcantly bloat sizes22:48
sbezverkportdirect: even though I understand the reason for your suggestion I am concerned that it will create some problem22:48
sdakeseems like people not interested in even maintaining dockerhub at all22:48
sdakeya - i agree re dockerhub builds22:48
sbezverkportdirect: how developer would know that three lines do not come with macro?22:49
sdakeabout the practical part - bloat sizes don't know but trust you say it is so it is22:49
SamYaplewe cant push our current images due to the size. we need to trim them down. to do that we must extend beyond Dockerfile since that is our limitation. this is how i can get a 40MB keystone image22:49
portdirectok - i'll through my comments into the ring. dockers --sqush (unless its changed) will make the situation potentially worse of us as it just take an image and flattens it to a single layer (essentially docker export - docker import), though I'm concerd that if we dump the dockerfile then we will make it much harder for ourselves and loose potential platform infexibility.22:50
SamYapleportdirect: no this is a differntthing22:50
SamYapleportdirect: this is official docker tooling22:50
SamYapleportdirect: it squashes images in layers now22:50
SamYapleerrr in a dockerfile22:51
*** fragatin_ has joined #openstack-kolla22:51
SamYaplebasically it builds a layer from the top of the dockerfile to the bottom22:51
portdirectSamYaple: thats what i was refering to I've been following, and your updating my knowledge of that ps as i type so I'll jump back out :)22:51
*** dave-mccowan has joined #openstack-kolla22:51
SamYapleso rabbitmq would have 3 layers (more or less). ubuntu->base->rabbitmq22:51
sdakeportdirect more brains welcome :)22:51
SamYaplenot jsut a single layer22:51
portdirectSamYaple: so it does what i had in that ps that i showed you nad i think you did the same?22:52
SamYapleportdirect: nah that was different if I remember correctly. that that was not official squash22:52
portdirectsbezverk: i would expect the end of that macro to go aws well - so a deveoper has to set up to annotations etc, but can just drop in that snippet of json without the yaml surrounding it22:53
SamYapleportdirect: that was unoffical peoples attempts at it22:53
*** fragatin_ has quit IRC22:53
SamYapleportdirect: this would be part of the dockerclient build. like dc.build(squash=True)22:53
SamYapleportdirect: but thats still not going to get us what we want unless we resign to install and uninstall build tools every layer (and that would _KILL_ IO and bandwidth)22:54
portdirectSamYaple: sorry not explaining myelf well, I know that ws unofficia, buth docker now does the same thing? when that pull request first started over at docker it was just to a single layer per image, not per dockerfile22:54
portdirectSamYaple: yeah - thats actually why i changed to alpine - as it was almost fast enough to make that practtical22:55
sbezverkportdirect: how about three macros ? head, body and tail?22:55
SamYapleportdirect: https://github.com/docker/docker/issues/332#issuecomment-25774041822:55
portdirectsbezverk: ok :)22:55
portdirectthough thats macro tastic...22:55
portdirectsbezverk: my concern was cutting options, so 3 macros wfm.22:56
portdirectSamYaple:nice22:56

SamYapleportdirect: but now we can get rid of the && crap22:57
sdakeportdirect the issue is in a typical CI pipeline all that stuff has to be built - which takes 4-8 hours because there is no docker cache22:57
sdakeand its built over and over and over22:57
sdakeklindgren is that accurate?22:57
portdirectsdake: i think it is22:57
sdakeso even --squash doesn't do the job22:57
SamYapleright. and it wont until we dont have common layers22:58
sdakeSamYaple how do we get there?22:58
SamYaplei started to detail a plan for that.22:58
portdirectsdake: itw would prbably make it take even longer :(22:58
sdakecool22:58
SamYaplepart of the issue is build _times_22:58
sdakei think alot fo people would be keen to see it22:58
SamYaplelayers solves build times22:58
SamYapleso without layers our build times sucks22:59
portdirectSamYaple: yeah a hich level overview would be great22:59
sdakelayers also solve pull times22:59
SamYapleso what klindgren is complaining about wont go away22:59
SamYaplenot when keystone is 40MB it doesnt :P22:59
sdakeSamYaple right - which is why you suggested --no-deps and i suggested pulling the deps from the docker registry22:59
klindgrensorry what am I complaining about?23:00

SamYapleat a certain point people must realize taht to build keystone, you must install build-tools. then packages, then pip stuff, then keystone23:01
klindgrenMaybe that was harlow.  I think I remember we were trying to investigate if we could be each project individually and re-use common layers.  But it seems like that may not be possible.23:01
