avassWe mentioned it briefly yesterday but in our monorepo we're currently running a job before all other jobs that compares a json file, containing information which functions should be part of a project, execution order etc, with which files that are changed to know which projects should be built and to only run those child jobs.08:37
*** sshnaidm|afk is now known as sshnaidm08:39

avassWe've wanted to do this directly in zuul to reduce the overhead for each buildset. I know there's the 'files:' attribute for jobs but we want to avoid duplicating that information so they don't mismatch and we miss running a job.08:42
avassI can't think of a way how this would be implemented without executing a script on the merger which probably isn't so good :)08:48

yoctozeptohi dear zuulians! I have a question - I remember an old discussion about Zuul working on providing a tooling for running Zuul jobs locally without Zuul - did it happen? where could I find more information?12:39

yoctozeptoavass: well, the use case is for kolla contributors to be able to run scenarios locally, so they really don't want to install zuul no matter how brilliant the peace of software it is (and it is very)14:09
*** jfoufas149 has joined #zuul14:10
yoctozeptowas worth checking the ground :P14:10
corvusyoctozepto: i think the runner is designed to handle that use case14:10

*** jfoufas1 has quit IRC14:11
yoctozeptocorvus: I'd love it to14:11
corvusyoctozepto: the idea would be that they would use the local cli to ask a running zuul to construct the job for it, and it would run the job locally.  the running zuul is only needed to parse and construct the configuration.14:11
yoctozeptothen we could just collaborate with zuul instead of crafting something shady for ourselves14:11
yoctozeptocorvus: could it be the opendev zuul?14:11
corvusyoctozepto: yep14:12
yoctozeptocorvus: well, you bought me then14:12
*** jamesmcarthur has quit IRC14:12
yoctozeptocorvus: I'm noob on zuul internals so glad you cleared that out14:12
corvusyoctozepto: so say there's a job in opendev "kolla-scenario-cupcakes"; you want to run that locally you say "zuul-runner run kolla-sconario-cupcakes from opendev.org" it talks to opendev.org says "how do i run kolla-scenario-cupcakes" opendev says "run these 12 playbooks" zuul-runner runs them locally14:13
corvusi may be hungry14:13
avassI believe the only requirement is that you need to bring your own secrets14:14
corvusyes and possibly nodes14:14
yoctozeptocorvus: you may indeed!14:14
corvus(nodes could be localhost though)14:14
yoctozeptoavass: sure things, let's assume it's secretless14:14
yoctozeptocorvus, avass: what would "deliver" the nodes though?14:14
yoctozeptousers would not be happy to ruin their hosts likely!14:15
yoctozepto:D14:15
corvusyoctozepto: the reason opendev.org is involved is that in order to know how to run 'kolla-scenario-cupcakes', zuul needs to read configuration from a couple thousand git repos.  that's not something you want to be doing locally.  so that's why it's constructed as an api query to get the job definition.14:15
yoctozeptocorvus: yeah, I got that point now :-)14:15
corvusyoctozepto: i think it's in the spec, but basically you give it an inventory matching the node set the job expects14:15
yoctozeptocorvus: ansible-speaking?14:15
corvusyoctozepto: i think?  or similar.14:16
avassI believe it was an ansible inventory yes14:16
yoctozeptocorvus: ok; once again into the speeeec :D14:16
yoctozepto"as an Ansible inventory"14:16
yoctozepto+114:16
yoctozeptook, so we would only have to instruct/help contributors deliver the nodes for themselves14:17
yoctozeptoI'm totally bought now that I understand where the full-blown Zuul fits14:17
yoctozeptohow likely is it to happen? or: how much effort would it require to bring zuul runner to life?14:18
fungithere are some changes already proposed which need review and refinement, i think?14:21
*** sshnaidm is now known as sshnaidm|rover14:22

mhuhello zuul-maint, this patch needs the last +3 to merge: https://review.opendev.org/#/c/728118/15:33
mhuzuul-maint, it would also be nice to add the doc for zuul-client on zuul-ci.org: https://review.opendev.org/#/c/751312/15:35
mhuand finally, the patch that adds the dockerfile for zuul-client: https://review.opendev.org/#/c/755519/15:37
tobiashmhu: I guess on that last one a infra root needs to add the secret before we can land that right?15:38
mhutobiash, depends whether we want to publish the docker image or not. Providing the Dockerfile to be built locally could be enough15:39
mhubut yeah, ideally there should be a follow-up to add the right secret and publish job15:40
tobiashah just saw that promote and release are commented out as well15:40
tobiashmhu: if we want to land this before that we should add zuul-client-build-image to the gate and comment to change that to zuul-client-upload-image when the secret is there15:41
