*** ahasenack has joined #openstack13:53

Spirilisthe thing is, openstack creates VMs using a qcow2 image that's backed by a common copy of the glance image used to start it13:54
Spirilisif you know that glance image will stick around forever, or at least have a backup copy of it, you can probably get away with just backing up the small-ish qcow2 file13:54
*** dayou has joined #openstack13:55
Spirilisotherwise if you absolutely insist on having a fully bootable independent file, you'd have to use qemu-img to copy the qcow2 into a fully-reduped raw file (so it'd read the qcow2 and the glance image off the /var/lib/nova/instances/_base dir) and write out a whole new one13:55
Spirilisthat would be I/O intensive.  probably not necessary if you keep a copy of the glance image backed up though, as I mentioned.13:55
kodapaSpirilis: The idea is to backup the whole openstack cluster13:55
Spirilisand you can always generate one of those big images later on, from backups13:55
kodapaSpirilis: So images will be backuped, too13:56
Spirilisaye13:56
*** bl has joined #openstack13:56

uvirtbotNew bug: #928251 in melange "Retrieving mac_address_range through the client causes a 404" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/92825113:56
Spirilismight require some fancy work to create a whole new glance image out of the backup, but not a huge problem13:56
Spirilisand you could possibly "restore" the qcow2 image to an existing instance and add it as a secondary disk using the libvirt tools13:57
Spirilisso you could mount it up under /mnt and restore individual files, etc.13:57
Spirilis(just thinking out loud how you would restore from such a backup)13:57
*** stuntmachine has joined #openstack13:57
Spirilisor of course you could shut down the instance you wish to restore, and just copy the restored qcow2 image back in there, then reboot it13:58
Spirilisand have a point-in-time version of that VM13:58
kodapahmm14:00
Spirilisso, in short, I think it's doable, and I think the openstack snapshot tool isn't the right tool as is evidenced by the 1-minute outage :)14:02
*** e1mer has joined #openstack14:03
Spirilisopenstack snapshot tool is probably a good way to create template VMs that derive from an existing image, where you can power it off before generating the snapshot14:03
Spirilisnow for nova-volume, that runs on top of LVM anyway, and you can use lvm snapshots to back those up14:04

Spirilise.g. on a compute node, you could use the builtin KVM (libvirt) tools to create a new install using kickstart, then power that down and import its disk into Glance14:49

Spirilisthough that's geared towards ubuntu based guests.14:50

heckjphschwartz|rem: if you're running nova-network on a separate box, make sure you've plumbed routes and/or changed the iptables to send the data to the correct place. Easy workaround I found - if this is the problem - is to run nova-api on the compute nodes (default for that routing through iptables is localhost). I don't use Kiall's packages, so can't answer for sure - but there's a guess.23:17
phschwartz|remI have nova-api, nova-network, and nova-compute on all the compute nodes.23:19
