treedSo, question about networking.05:37
treedAs far as I can tell, there's no easy way to embed a nova installation into another network.05:38
treedThat is: Say I have a 10.0.0.0/8 network.05:38
treedAnd I want to just have the VMs be directly on that network, by delegating a portion of the address space.05:38
treedI've managed to make it work by using FlatManager and directly messing with the database.05:39
treedBut that's clearly not what I should be doing.05:39
treedIs there a way to do this that doesn't involve direct manipulation, or is what I want just completely out of the question?05:39
treedOr should I be like... writing a different network manager?05:39

gbear14275Hey guys,  Could anyone here give me a rough ballpark on what it might take to get a proof of concept cloud up using openstack $'s wise?08:52
gbear14275I'm curious about trying to push for this to be explored in my office, but don't have any idea what a small instance might look like cost wise.  I'm guessing/hoping less than a VMware based system08:53
kaigana super small poc can run on a single computer08:54
gbear14275Kaigan,  ok...  what do you think it would cost to get 2 racks up and running08:56
gbear14275There isn't any actual costs are there?  Apart from the talent to do it... so I guess a better question might be... what sort of workload hour wise would it take to setup and maintain a 2 rack system08:56
gbear14275My goal is to demonstrate for the cost of a VMware license set, we can hire and employ on site support as an alternative... I think that is a reachable goal08:57
kaiganI actually never ran more that on 4 machines for testing purposes so I can't really answer that08:58
siwosdo not compare openstack to vmware08:58
siwosfor office use (several tens of machines), I guess vmware is a better solution08:58
siwosfor openstack you need to hire a person with very special skills to support it08:58
*** alperkanat has joined #openstack08:59
siwosI think it pays off if you run several hundreds of vm-s at least08:59
gbear14275Siwos, that's exactly what I'm trying to understand... what is the availability and cost of those personnel?08:59
gbear14275I guess I'm most curious about what sort of critical mass we would need to be able to present a solid alternative proof of concept09:00
gbear142751 person able to setup and manage?  3 people a better point?  You mentioned 100's of Vm's is a tradeoff point...  ?09:01

siwosmy guess - in the US it might be around 100USD/year or more09:05

KiallYes/No .. I have 2 PPAs, "openstack" and "openstack-nightly"12:17
bennerI'm trying to use nova-volume and I see, that after iscsi disk apearts in compute node, nova-volume seeking  /dev/disk/by-path/....-lun-0 but my device is /dev/disk/by-path/....-lun-1, I found in "zero" is hard coded: mount_device = ("/dev/disk/by-path/ip-%s-iscsi-%s-lun-0". any ideas how to fix it? Is there need some special iscsi iniatiator configuration?12:17

MrBIOShey folks, if I have multiple compute nodes, how do DHCP requests from one compute node get to the network/scheduler node that's running the DHCP server?21:39
MrBIOSmy apologies if that question doesn't make sense21:39
sniperd_notmyname: Namely, the zone to server ratio21:39
sniperd_notmyname: e.g. should I have 5 devices on the same zone, and 5 zones21:40
notmynamesniperd_: it doesn't matter how much is in a zone (normally--that may change depending on your deloyment details)21:40
sniperd_storage to proxy ratio, etc21:40
*** gporras has left #openstack21:41
sniperd_notmyname: so just watch the metrics and ratio accordingly depending on the deployment?21:41
notmynamesniperd_: generally, what size will your swift cluster be? (amount of storage space)21:42
notmynamegeneral order of magnitude if you can't be specific21:42
sniperd_Maybe to start out with, 10T21:42
sniperd_Was thinking 5 storage nodes with 2T each21:42
sniperd_each storage node in its own zone21:42
*** kbringard has quit IRC21:43
notmynamethat's ok. but zones should generally be about the same size. so growing a cluster can either be done by adding equally to each zone or adding a new zone the same size as the others21:43
*** chucklez has left #openstack21:43
sniperd_so, to expand, then I would add 5 more storage nodes each with 2T, doubling the size21:43
sniperd_Or add more storage to said nodes, etc21:44
notmyname_very_ loose guidelines for proxy:storage ratio is about 1:20ish. but that's _highly_ dependent on your use case (large files vs small files, read vs write, etc)21:44
notmynamethat's at large scale21:44
notmynameyou'll want to have at least 2 proxies to start with for HA21:45

notmynamethey don't21:45
notmynameuse a load balancer (or round-robin dns or whatever to balance the requests)21:45
sniperd_so the rebuilding of the *.builder files and scp'ing to the backends can be done from either proxy21:45
notmynameyes. or even on some other machine (even your laptop while you're on the plane!)21:46
