notmynamesobe_: yes. each swift cluster is autonomous, but it would be possible for an auth system or ID management system to keep references to many swift clusters. this is the sort of thing that keystone (another openstack project) is working towards02:54
notmynamesobe_: we've talked about testing swift clusters dispersed over a wide geographic area (and then fixing any issues that show up) and adding support for "replication policies", but it hasn't been done yet02:55

Kiallin case they*06:16
Orpok06:16
KiallOpenStack Swift (Object Storge) and OpenStack Nova's volume storage are two very different services..06:18
KiallSwift is basically Amazon S3 (and actually is RackSpace cloud files...)06:18
KiallWhile nova's volume service is quite like Amazon's EBS service..06:18
KiallOne provides a service you can use HTTP GET/POST/PUT/DELETE requests against to store files..06:19
Kiallwhile the other provides a "over the network USB drive" you can format and do what you like with..06:19
Orpah. ok. I am wondering what sort of storage devices Rackspace and/or AWS uses for their "volume service"? I suppose they have storage networks - with SANS? or do they also use commodity drive systems there too. (hope that is clear)06:20
KiallSo - yes, they would normally be hosted on different servers..06:20
Kiall(Also .. Swift is optional if you just want VMs... And Nova is optional if you just want object storage)06:20

heyhoHello, anyone knows if openstack is capable of doing automatic live migration if a physical compute node goes down? Using nfs instance storage maybe? Is it possible too?13:39
koolhead11..............13:42
Spirilisheyho: I don't think it has automated migration (and it wouldn't be a "live migration" anyhow, since the compute node is down)... in fact I think to make that happen you have to manually edit the database to move it to another box13:42
SpirilisBut it is possible, with NFS backed instance storage.  Live migration (from compute nodes that are up) also requires NFS instance storage13:43

micadeyeyeok. what would the root password be, when sshing? I guess the details i used when registering the image. right. Something like "ssh -i nova_key.priv root@10.0.0.2"15:11
tjoyright, when you use -i you bypass the password15:11
tjoyyou have one half of a keypair that's stronger than a password so it never asks15:11

LeanderSpirilis: please forgive me if there's a sort of manual wiki which details these procedures, but i can't seem to locate any :/16:24
SpirilisLeander: you actually don't need an api key16:24
Spirilisthe way it works, from what I gather, is that Keystone has 3 ways of authenticating you.16:25
Spirilis1. Using your username and password, along with a tenant16:25
Spirilis2. Using a single string, called an API key, which must be stored in keystone's "token" table and keystone looks up the token in that table to find your username & tenant (you can use this to generate tokens that will become hard-coded in cloud-aware applications, for example)16:26
LeanderSpirilis: the nova command insists on asking for an API-KEY :/16:26
Spirilis3. Using EC2 credentials, in which case you hit nova-api with an EC2 access key and secret key, nova-api asks keystone if it knows who the heck you are based on those, and keystone should reply with your user & tenant if it finds that in its "credentials" table16:26
Spirilisah k, it's possible that's just its way of saying "permission denied"16:26
Leanderit does the same for the admin user16:27

DJ-RPM-rollafter rebooting a nova-network host, is there a trick that one might employ to access the instances on nodes behind it?  (Vlan mode, here)...   i can see the vnet MAC addresses when i examine the bridge interface, but they don't get registered in the arp cache on the nova-network server after reboot... manually adding them doesn't work... making the if promisc also doesn't work..  anyone have a strategy for dealing with this... or am i hosed?22:03

tjoyif you have a solaris storage server, for instance, you can export volumes from that23:16

tjoythere are others but i can't name them23:16
*** mattray has quit IRC23:16
tjoyblobs can be provided by glance for small loads, or swift for large ones23:17
tjoyglance is generally just for vm images23:17
tjoylive storage for vms can be on volumes or local storage on the nodes23:17
ashvaibhavok... I guess I need to understand the basic architecture a bit more23:18
tjoyright, eucalyptus crams lots of services on one control node23:18
tjoyor at least it did 2 years ago23:18
tjoyopenstack can work that way but any service can run on its own machine, provided that it can communicate with the rest of it all23:19
tjoyso there's nova-api to communicate with users, nova-volume to serve out iscsi, nova-compute to run VMs, etc23:19
*** localhost has quit IRC23:21
ashvaibhavok... and is it that openstack works only over KVM and cant work over XEN?23:21

tjoythere are also drivers for more hypervisors, like lxc23:22

tjoyxen's paravirtualization can be faster, all things being equal23:25
tjoybut xen can only run operating systems that are coded to work with xen in paravirtualized mode23:25
tjoyyou need CPU extensions to run, for instance, windows under xen23:25

ashvaibhavbut I would want as much flexibility as possible23:29
ashvaibhavyap.. hadoop is what I plan23:29
ashvaibhavmyhadoop kind of thing23:29
tjoywell for ease of setup i recommend openstack with kvm. if you really need performance, you could go with xen paravirt, but openstack/xen isn't as well-documented as kvm23:30
