notmynameI /think/ so, but that's just a guess (I'm not a nova dev)01:28
notmynamedopry: if you aren't that familiar with the code, I'd suggest you start with whichever one you think is easier to get. by the time you get more familiar with the codebase, diablo should be release :-)01:29
*** catbot has joined #openstack01:30
dopryThey're both equally easy to get from the PPA published on launch pad.. It's pretty much an install ubuntu, and apt-get everything in as far as I can tell...01:32
dopryI don't really care to be too familiar with the code base, but then again diablo will be released in the next few weeks anyway...01:32
catbotopenstack has ability to start multiple VMs with one instance, so I guest openstack can be used for desktop virtualization, just like VMWare view, right? I'd like to know if anybody's thinking about that01:35

catbota license question, If I start 2 VMs of win7, then do I need pay for 2 licenses? or just need pay for one?02:04
dweimercatbot: It depends on the license. Microsoft offers a datacenter license where you can license a host for unlimited VMs. If you just have the standard or enterprise license though, then each VM needs it's own license.02:05

catbotdweimer, usually, microsoft offers a serial number as license for home edition, when installed win7, I typed the serial number. As you know, there is a feature on openstack, one image and multiple instance, which means multiple instances of win7 will have the same serial number02:11
*** katkee has joined #openstack02:13
dweimerI haven't used openstack specifically for our Windows guests, but in a VMWare environment we used volume licensing. So we run our own key management service that gives out the licenses we've payed for. When we first started out with <20 guests we had to call microsoft to get a unique license key for each guest. There might be a better way to do it now, this was 1-2 years ago.02:14
*** shang has joined #openstack02:15
dweimerHere's a decent overview of the license costs. It looks like standard and enterprise edition also offer a smaller number of free virtual guests under the license: http://blogs.technet.com/b/mattmcspirit/archive/2008/11/13/licensing-windows-server-in-a-virtual-environment.aspx02:16

a1xrthe only part of nova that needs to know about VLAN tags is the bridged part21:42
vishyi ended up running nova-api on every host because metadata was breaking21:42
kbringardvishy: the biggest problem I've come across with that is that each network controller eats an IP, so you're limited in how far you can scale your compute nodes, right?21:42

*** msivanes has left #openstack21:46
vishya1xr: but what you're describing isn't really a cloud anymore21:46
kbringardvishy: I know you're getting tag teamed here, but quick question… if I put an nginx "load balancer" in front of multiple APIs, it used to mess up the signatures because they were generated client side based on the API url… do you know if anyone has worked around that in the last 5 or 6 months :-)21:46
vishyno21:47
kbringardno, you don't know, or no, no one has?21:47
vishybut why not use ha_proxy with one ip?21:47
vishynot that i know of21:47
vishykbringard: I don't really understand the issue21:47
kbringardwell, the problem was that it would hit the IP on api1, but the signature was generated for the IP on the LB21:47
kbringardso when it gets proxied back to the API server, the signature generated by the API server and the signature sent by the client didn't match21:48

kbringardI would think so… I only started thinking about it again like an hour ago, so I was wondering if anyone else had set something similar up21:50

vishykbringard: but it is coming from wsgi req.host21:51
kbringardah, well I've not tried it in months, so perhaps it's been resolved21:51
vishykbringard: is there a way to make the proxy not change that?21:51
kbringardI just didn't want to jump back into it without asking if someone knew it still didn't work :-)21:51
