clarkbfungi: cardoe: maybe we can ask the gerrit devs to put links to the groups that can satisfy conditions in the submit requirements view conditions card pop up thing15:35
clarkbthey do show people who can leave those votes but only if those people were already activeo n the change15:36
clarkbwhich isn't useful in this particular situation15:36

gouthamranyone affected with this matrix/irc bridge issue? https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-appservice-irc/issues/185021:03
gouthamri hope it wasn't the worst case scenario identified here: https://www.oftc.net/2025/02/28/update/ 21:05
clarkbon one of the ptg etherpads someone said that the bridges are half shutdown. YOu basically can't use the bridge to auth or join new channels anymore but existing channels work?21:34
clarkbI don't know who posted that though21:34
fungithat's unfortunate21:35
gouthamrhttps://etherpad.opendev.org/p/apr2025-ptg-os-tc#L325 21:35
fungii guess it's a sign they didn't meet their funding goal in that case?21:35
clarkbI have been checking their foundation blog posts for updates (they post fridays usually) and haven't see any but didn't check the most recent one21:36
gouthamryeah, there've been pretty good "project updates", was hoping it meant good news21:36
gouthamrdo you have any experience with "matterbridge"?21:37
gouthamrit seems quite fancy if it can do all kinds of bridges21:37
fungimy only experience with it is not having heard that name until this very moment21:38
gouthamr:D21:38
clarkbwhat is the context of it?21:39
fungii guess it would be a custom way to bridge a matrix channel to a slack channel and an irc channel, in order to meet the request from some openstack operators?21:40
gouthamri am assuming we run it, and allow bridging to our channels/slack/discord/<tool> 21:40
clarkbI'll say right now I have very little interest in running such a bridge. My experience with those tools is that they don't ever work and its a terrible experience (this based on the gitea and gerrit discord bridges to matrix)21:41
clarkbsomething smaller in scope like oftc is probably more doable simply because the number of protocol problems is significantly reduced21:42
gouthamrack, i really liked the matrix/oftc app-service bridge - it was pretty seamless to me, and to a bunch of drive-by contributors and new folks21:42
clarkbhttps://matrix.org/blog/2025/04/11/this-week-in-matrix-2025-04-11/ ya I don't see anything from their latest blog post21:43
clarkbbut as mentioned during the ptg if I had a vote (I don't) I'd suggest just using matrix21:44
clarkbyou get the ease of use of the other platforms (web login, web client, persistent data, emojis!, etc) but don't have to compromise on free software ideals21:44
gouthamrI think so, but all these irc bots and integrations we’ve accrued over the years would need to change, and what if some part of the community doesn’t want to join us there21:57
clarkbright these are all risks. Some of our bots area already running on matrix (we have logging and gerrit posts, but not meeting management). But also I think I'm still more trying to positiion this for the people who don't want irc22:00
clarkbacknowledge that and say ok cool can we try matrix?22:00
clarkbmy furstration in these related conversations has been that everyone just wants to say slack and are unwilling to compromise even calling it a compromise. While refusing to actually use the compromise that is free software: matrix22:01
clarkbpart of the community isn't going to join you on slack. I'm one of them so I don't think trying matrix is any worse off22:06
gouthamragreed; what I could understand from last week’s discussion is that companies are hard to change, but, people are willing.. with this matrix OFTC bridging thing for the past year, I found people loved the “newer interface” and ease of staying connected alluring… there were no objections; I didn’t meet the people whose corporate overlords only approved Slack :)22:06
clarkband the near complete dismissal without even trying it is frustrating when opendev has run matrix infrastructure of one sort or another for years at this point22:06
clarkbwe started around when freenode exploded whenever that was22:07
gouthamrI didn’t see the dismissal of matrix though; just those that said my company doesn’t permit anything apart from Slack22:07
clarkbI think actions speak loudly here: how many slack servers are there? Apparently more than a handful. How mayn openstack matrix rooms? zero22:08
gouthamrthat might just be a result of how decentralized we are; and lack of awareness that opendev has a home server22:14
fungiyeah, i'm in an elected leadership position in the open regulatory compliance working group. they started out using matrix and i joined their channels immediately when created. later they decided to move to slack in order to improve engagement, and i still haven't gotten around to setting up a slack connection to those new channels several months later22:35
gouthamrcrap what was their reason?22:36
clarkbgouthamr: ya that may be. If that is the underlying issue then I think a bigger issue of being unaware of the homeserver is not being aware of community norms and the four opens22:36
funginot enough businesspeople could figure out matrix and they were already on slack for other internal work stuff, apparently22:40
