sdaguefolks are aware all the requirements jobs are failing on python 3.5?16:19
sdagueit looks like someone mistakenly made py35 unit test voting on requirements stable/newton16:40
sdagueso all the stable/newton approves are failing on gate16:41
dirksdague: looking17:11
dirksdague: hmm, looks like that was some mass-change in https://review.openstack.org/#/c/412574/17:13

tonybdirk: I am now s'up?21:29
dirktonyb:  https://review.openstack.org/#/c/411332/21:35
dirktonyb: although in parallel a review was started to revert the py35 job addition on stable/21:35
dirkSo i guess either one or both is fine21:36
tonybdirk: I like that infra fix better21:36
tonybdirk: as I said backporting that is a stable-policy violation21:36
dirktonyb: which part of the stable policy?21:39
dirktonyb: is it really a new feature?21:39
dirkAny case a failing nonvoting job is also bad, and the change is relatively small, does not change an api and is in master for quite some time with no known regressions21:41
dirkI think its fine21:41
dirkIt is a bit on the corner of the usual stable backporting, agreed21:42
tonybdirk: IMO it's a code refactor.  I agree that it's a line ball call on backporting it.  Even if it *is* a violation it's a minor one21:43
dirktonyb: true, but not for the sake of refactoring. Its a compatibility fix that is done by an isolated refactor21:47
tonybdirk: how about this as a compromise.  I'll approve it after 1600 localtime if the project-config change hasn't merged21:48
tonybdirk: I still think it's the wrong solution21:48
dirkYeah. Hmm21:49
* dirk looks at the infra change again21:49
dirkOkay, so the infra change removes the check all together, rather than merely downgrading it to non-voting21:53
tonybdirk: Yeah.  I messed up when I added that and made it global when that really wasn't the aim21:54
dirkRight. I see why you believe its out of policy then.21:58
tonybdirk: My worklist for today: https://review.openstack.org/#/q/starredby:tonyb+is:open+topic:feature/add-constraints-support21:59
dirkAnyway we don't have to fix it twice, ine fix is enough. Although i still prefer py3 compat, but maybe I'm overly biased21:59
tonybfor 100+ patches from the 2 of us that's a pretty reasonable failure rate21:59
dirkI am always confused on why a project with such a crazy test automation is so strict on stable ..22:00
tonybdirk: That's a complex issue but we basically responded to what consumers said they wanted.  Also we've shown that anythign that isn't master doesn't get the same attention from developers and so is prone to bitrot22:02
dirkYeah, bitrot on stable is a serious issue, but also because it is exceptionally hard to get corner case fixes upstreamed in stable22:03
dirkIt's often better for your mental health to just patch it downstream.. which doesn't help in interop22:04
dirktonyb:  remove thr pbr from your work queue, it is fixed, just forgot to rebase it on top if the latest revision22:05
tonybdirk: I'm interested to hear more about that.  It shoudln't be that hard if the patch is appropriate (http://docs.openstack.org/project-team-guide/stable-branches.html#appropriate-fixes) or is the issue that appropriate doesn't cover what you'd like to see backported22:05
tonybdirk: \o/22:06
dirktonyb: nova-docker is pretty darn deas so probably not important, the rest good luck22:07
tonybdirk: :) Yeah nova-docker is pretty low on the list I s'pose I could hjust abandon it22:08
tonybdirk: but I can be a little obsessive about this kind of thing22:08
*** sdague has quit IRC22:08
dirktonyb: as an example i had issues already in backporting fixes for regressions introduced on stable in a.prevous stable backport22:15
tonybdirk: If only you knew the Stable PTL who could help you with that22:16
tonybdirk: that's pretty clearly a regression and shoudl be fixed22:16
dirkThe policy is very high level which is good but that leaves a lot of room for interpretation as well.22:16
tonybdirk: with some hand waving around timing22:16
dirkSure, but then people argue its not a relevantly user visible22:17
dirktonyb: right but it always requires discussion22:19
dirktonyb:  in e.g. linux you have something like "fixes: githash" and tooling that automatically cherry picks that wherever the previous change was cherry picked22:20
dirkNo discussion whatsoever22:20
tonybdirk: Fair point there's lots of discussion22:20
dirkAd sometimes poking your eye and pulling hair out is just less pain ;-)22:21
