mihalis68no offense to canonical, but we've been to the ubuntu-hoopla promo sessions at the summits and don't want those to crop up a lot at operators meetups,15:34

mcunietti_I called Nuage them but they're unresponsive.15:46
emccormickok we can table that. If they need a slot, we have plenty of open ones. It's not like anyone is forced to attend. I guess just tell them to keep it technical15:47
mihalis68Nuage is big in SDN with openstack, and therefore also openstack neutron. Sessions on SDN in general or neutron would be fine. A session on a single SDN solution would be too vendor-y15:47
mihalis68just one personal opinion15:48

fifieldtlightning talks are short enough even a pitch could be ok :)15:51
zioprotosounds good, if we are not happy, we learn the lesson for the next ops meetup15:51
mihalis68for making progress here, I think it's fine15:51

erhudyah, thanks19:06
*** jamesdenton has joined #openstack-operators19:06
klindgrenyea - we dont use DVR, but we were having major issues with OVS 2.5.x in a LACP bonding and not correctly handling flooded unicast traffic (IE unknown unicast)19:06
klindgrenwhere it would loop traffic back out the other bond member, causing maclearns19:06
erhudyah right19:07
erhudyi have been fishing around for any intermediate steps that can get us off nova-network multi-host and onto neutron without jumping all the way to calico right away, but every time i start looking into things again i run into the buzzsaw of people complaining about OVS19:08
klindgrenlinux bridge?19:08
erhudythe challenge with linuxbridge is we'd have to restructure the clusters to do dedicated network nodes and it's adding bottlenecks where currently none exist19:10
erhudyright now all the HVs in a cluster are on the network edge with no network SPOFs19:11
*** christx2 has quit IRC19:11
*** karthikpr has joined #openstack-operators19:11
erhudyit feels like every possibility for what i can do with vanilla neutron is a step back in one way or another, even DVR19:11
erhudyhence the interest in calico, but using calico requires using BGP and that means a change in contract with the network infrastructure, so i'm trying to find a way of leaving nova-network behind that doesn't involve a contract chang19:12

mdorman_erhudy:  do you need to do tenant networks?   we actually just drop all vms directly onto a real vlan/provider network so we don’t have any routers or network nodes19:41
mdorman_i guess we also don’t do floating IPs the normal NAT way (we just route them), so you’d still have to have something somewhere doing the natting for floating ips19:42
erhudysince it's a private cloud putting everything directly onto a provider network is fine, but we want to retain floating IPs as well so that people can assign stable IPs if they need to19:46
mdorman_yup, yup.19:47
erhudyare you using routed racks or spanning L2?19:48
mdorman_routed racks.  the L2 scope stops at the TOR switch.  everything beyond that is all routed19:49
mdorman_so we inject static routes into the network for hte floating IP, with a next hop of the fixed IP of the vm it’s associated to19:49
erhudyeach rack has its own flat network scope for the provider network, or it's done on the underlay with tunnels or something?19:49
erhudythe attractiveness of calico to us is being able to use BGP to distribute static host routes everywhere so that we can get off spanned L2, so i'm open to other ideas on accomplishing it without that19:50
mdorman_right, yeah.  no we don’t span L2 anywhere.  so each rack has it’s own neutron network.  we do some scheduling tricks in nova so that if a vm is scheduled to a particular rack, it also gets a port on that network.  said another way, users don’t get the choose what network they get put on.   and we also don’t provide any guarantee around L2 adjacency for VMs.  we tell people we guarantee L3 connectivity and that’s it.19:52
mdorman_so if people really need L2 then they have to do their own tunneling19:52
erhudyahhh tricks19:53
erhudyi don't want people to be able to create their own networks either, because most of our customers are not really networking-minded19:54
erhudyjust dropping everyone on a flat provider network is attractive19:54

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:25:11 mcunietti_  the agenda is not set!20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:25:23 mcunietti_  we need to order prints, but looks like it is still open20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:25:34 zioproto  there is an excel file somewhere, let me look for it20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:25:50 fifieldt  was the agenda emailed out? I don;t remember seeing it20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:25:55 emccormick  I think the schedule won't change, but there are open holes we can fill in20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:26:06 mcunietti_  moreover one of the sponsors asked for a slot for a talk, and he got no answer from anybody. So I would like to help him getting his slot. I added his talk in the etherpad, as the last topic20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:26:07 emccormick  Yeah Melvin has sent it a couple times20:20

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:27:03 mcunietti_  the agenda I got is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EUSYMs3GfglnD8yfFaAXWhLe0F5y9hCUKqCYe0Vp1oA/edit#gid=200605463520:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:27:20 mcunietti_  it's a tech talk, anyway20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:27:24 zioproto  what is this talk he wants to do about ?20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:27:45 emccormick  I think if you have to print it, It's fine as is. We may have some add-ons, but that's not uncommon20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:27:57 mcunietti_  "Strategies for migrating workloads from VMware, AWS or Azure to OpenStack" is the title20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:28:16 mcunietti_  it's about their new Openstack project, Coriolis20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:28:24 mihalis68 is this a big tent project?20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:28:31 mcunietti_  an open source tool to migrate VMs between hypervisors20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:28:34 mihalis68 or at least official openstack?20:20
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:28:39 mcunietti_  and he's a very skilled tech20:20

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:29:41 emccormick  though as with anything I'm sure they like to sell services20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:29:41 mcunietti_  Ale, they're asking questions about Coriolis20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:29:55 alexpilotti mcunietti_: ciao Mariano20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:30:21 mcunietti_  Ale, can you explain if Coriolis is an Openstack project or under the big tent?20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:31:40 zioproto  alexpilotti: ciao Alessandro. We are discussing your request to get a slot to present something as a sponsor. We are afraid of this requests :D Will you just present your open source project ? I would be afraid all sponsors inthe future then will ask to present a product.20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:31:41 alexpilotti Coriolis uses a significant number of bit tent projects oslo, keystone, barbican to name a few20:21

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:32:44 alexpilotti anyway, there was a communication issue about what the session had to be or not20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:32:49 zioproto  I am okay with sponsor presentations as long as the presentation is about a open source software.20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:33:01 <-- emagana (~emagana@173.226.103.171) has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:33:26 alexpilotti that would be ok as the entire core engine of Coriolis is open source20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:33:48 zioproto  I think what everybody wants to avoid is 'business presentations' :) am I right ?20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:33:48 mihalis68 I think this is ok personally, but I would like the event attendees to comment (I can't go)20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:33:59 alexpilotti alternatively, I could talk about OpenStack / Hyper-V / Windows20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:34:20 mihalis68 no offense to canonical, but we've been to the ubuntu-hoopla promo sessions at the summits and don't want those to crop up a lot at operators meetups,20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:34:22 emccormick  yeah, so long as it's a tech talk and not a biz talk I'm cool with it :)20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:34:45 mcunietti_  Alessandro does only tech talks AFAIK20:21

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:35:18 mihalis68 when we arranged the NYC meet up, a canonical person wanted to moderate one on containerization. We established that it was general and open, not ubuntu-focused, so it was fine and she did a nice job20:21
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:35:19 emccormick  eeeeexcellent20:21

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:36:36 shintaro  No objection, but we don't have a big room left open. only room for 30ppl20:22

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:38:07 mcunietti_  I think we'll have the exact same issue with Nuage Networks, another sponsor20:22

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:40:31 mcunietti_  Giulio Barki from Nuage Networks is coming in this channel to discuss the issue20:22
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:40:44 emccormick  On another MIL topic, Melvin suggested moderators should prod the list individually for their session etherpads. Is that OK or too spammy?20:22

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:44:00 emccormick  ok I shall prod with tags. Is there an official list of tags somewhere?20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:44:08 emccormick  or just improvise?20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:44:27 fifieldt  mailman might have one. I can make them too, in theory20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:44:48 fifieldt  but no wiki page for ops ML like they have in dev <ML20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:46:19 mcunietti_  I called Nuage them but they're unresponsive.20:23
ducttape_mrhillsman - why is my nic getting dumped in here so much ???20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:47:46 emccormick  ok we can table that. If they need a slot, we have plenty of open ones. It's not like anyone is forced to attend. I guess just tell them to keep it technical20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:47:49 mihalis68 Nuage is big in SDN with openstack, and therefore also openstack neutron. Sessions on SDN in general or neutron would be fine. A session on a single SDN solution would be too vendor-y20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:48:12 mihalis68 just one personal opinion20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:48:21 zioproto  I agree with mihalis6820:23

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:51:10 mcunietti_  and it's in the lightning talks20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:51:29 fifieldt  lightning talks are short enough even a pitch could be ok :)20:23

mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:51:30 mihalis68 for making progress here, I think it's fine20:23
mrhillsman2017-03-07 09:51:54 mihalis68 I think we need a canned "how a sponsor can give a talk at a meet up" explanation20:23

mrhillsmanit is a bit slow, should work though, i gave bot too much at once :)20:25
mrhillsmanthere was a misunderstanding about the meeting this morning20:25
mrhillsmani am capturing the logs but did not know joins and exits were included so apologies20:25
mdorman_erhudy:  yeah it’s mostly worked well for us, other than horsing around with a separate neutron network per rack.  there is some segmented network support in neutron now that should allow you to do a single network made up of disjoint L2 segments.  but i think what’s missing there still is floating ip support20:27
klindgrenerhudy, what release are you on?20:28
erhudyjust finished upgrading the last of our kilo clusters to liberty, mitaka is in the pipeline but that'll be the end of the road for these trusty-based clusters20:28
klindgrenI was going to say you should look at the routed-network stuff, assuming you are on a newer release.  All the nova-scheduling stuff I htink was suppose to land in ocata.  The neutron being able to handle a network that is a collection of provider networks.20:29
erhudyi don't plan on reworking the networking on our existing clusters20:29
*** admin0 has quit IRC20:29
klindgrenI think that stuff made it into N20:29
erhudywe will be putting some engineering effort into xenial for the next generation of clusters, which will be ocata at minimum20:29
erhudythough by the time any of us find time to do it we might be looking at pike20:30
klindgrenI believe HP was working on being able to "route" ips on a routed network using PGB20:30
klindgrenbut I think they blew up before that actually got implemented20:30
klindgrenBGP*20:30
erhudythat's effectively what calico does, you have BIRD peered with BGP on your switches and it injects lots of host static routes that way20:32
klindgrenWe might actually take that on and make that work upstream.  As we would like to distribute the routed ip's via BGP rather than via20:32
klindgrenstatic  route additions20:32
erhudyso that you can have VMs with IPs in the wrong subnet for the rack they're in, but the traffic makes it there anyway because of the static routes20:32
erhudyit's a bit brute force but seems effective if you're willing to accept the tradeoffs20:33
erhudyand the added complexity of having to deploy etcd and BIRD20:35
mdorman_yeah if we were starting over from scratch right now, calico is pretty attractive.  we’ve talked to them a few times about our use case, it’s a pretty good match.. but not worth the effort of nuke and paving what we have now20:41
klindgrenmy concern with the BGP stuff, is that if you break etcd/bird - you are going to withdrawl all the routes.20:41
klindgrenso a systemic control plane issue could cause a massive dataplane outage.20:42
klindgrenI am not sure if you can configure the switches to not withdraw routes if it looses a bgp peer, or if you could configure a long enough timeout to make that effectively a non-issue20:43
erhudya fair concern, one of the strong upsides of nova-network has always been that even in the total absence of the control plane individual HVs and their instances will just keep on trucking20:43
erhudybut, it's dead and buried now and we are one of a dwindling number of operators still using it, so one way or another we need to finalize an escape plan20:45
logan-klindgren: yeah we run graceful restart bgp extensions to allow for restarts of bird/temporary bgp peer loss without route withdrawl20:45
klindgrenyea - my fear is more like what happens when etcd blows up, or a networking change causes the servers to be unable to establish a bgp session20:47
klindgrenor something more in line with that failure mode.  IE its a control plane issue.20:48
klindgrenthat causes VM connectivity to go away20:48
logan-right20:48
klindgrenwhich makes everyone very un happy20:48
mdorman_if bgp ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy20:49
klindgrenmy xp has always been people dont really care about control plane failures.  As long as their VM's dont see an impact (stay network available) they could (for the most part) care less if the API's were down for 1-2 hours.20:49
klindgrensome people might be unhappy that their ci/cd tasks failed because it couldn't kick a vm build or something20:49
erhudymy experience as well20:50
erhudypeople mutter a bit if the API calls fail, but everyone will sure as hell notice if they suddenly lose all their SSH connections and can't get back on20:50
logan-yeah, fwiw my data plane reliability with calico has been great. 2 separate peering sessions announcing to 2 diff networks, and have not had any issues with etcd cluster state (down, unhealthy) causing data plane impact20:52
*** rebase has joined #openstack-operators21:04
klindgrenlogan-, is that doing an etcd/bird session per HV? or are you more centralized than that?  IE a few control plane servers that talk to a few switches?21:07
*** armax has quit IRC21:09
logan-etcd cluster members on control nodes, etcd proxies on each HV, and bird on each HV with 2 v4 and 2 v6 peers on each HV21:14
logan-the control nodes (neutron-server etc) does not participate in the bgp21:15
