XacsHi. I have a simple question about VM(pets) HA. Is there any document that explain about deploying openstack with VM HA enabled? I read several documents talking about some mechanisms such as nova-evacuate, VM-ensembles, and openstack heat HA. But I don't know which one can be used, and which one is the best method to provide pets VM high availability.17:05
klindgrenAs far as I know - nova does not have anything to detect when vm's that should be running and attempt to restart them or attempt to rebuild them somewhere else.  I believe that heat might have that functionality.  Nova-evacuate is to be used only in the case that a server has gone down and you have shared storage for your vms.  Then it will attempt to move vm's from that host to other hosts, but only if you run the command18:07
klindgren (not really HA imho).18:07
klindgrenI have seen stuff where people using neutron + allowed-address pairs18:07
klindgrenwill use keepalived to float an ip between two servers for a service that htey wish to keep online18:08
klindgrenhttp://blog.aaronorosen.com/implementing-high-availability-instances-with-neutron-using-vrrp/18:09
klindgrenalso last time i heard nova-evacuate was an admin only function18:09
klindgrenIt seems like the movement has been less towards making your VM's specifically HA, and more towards making your service/service configuration HA/fault tollerant18:10
klindgrenIt also looks like vm-ensembles is a spec to allow when you tell nova to boot a group of vms (IE saying you want more than 1) that you could have then be placed on different compute nodes via an anti-affinity filter.  It also looks likes vm-ensambles never made it to a commited patch?18:21
klindgrenI never used it - so unsure if it made it into later releases under a different name.18:23
Xacsklindgren: Really thanks for your useful comments. So, Nova-evacuate is not an automatic way of fail-over. It is admin task to brings them up again(At-least need to be scripted). Also, vm-ensamble is not a solution at all. Let me to check your link about neutron and allowed-address. Is there any document explain about heat HA(except the wiki page) and how to use it to achieve fault tolerant instance running?18:23
klindgrenI haven't used heat to do stuff - so I dunno what HA functions it has.18:24
Xacsklindgren: Thanks again, just checking your the link.18:25
Xacsyour link, typo :)18:25

Xacsklindgren: It sound like that "nautron + allowed address pair" is only worked for stateless instances such as web server, .... But not useful for stateful instances(e.g. Mediawiki with mysql database). ??18:32
