andyjones2001hi all, I'm running through https://docs.openstack.org/kolla-kubernetes/latest/deployment-guide.html and running into python error at kolla-kubernetes-genpwd (TypeError: key: expected bytes or bytearray, but got 'str') - is this the right channel to ask in ?08:46

k_mouzagood afternoon/morning guys! I'm deploying Ceph with Kolla and after the deploy has finished successfully, my Ceph cluster reports no OSDs. I've partitioned the drives in the storage nodes using the _FO{0,1,2,3,4) suffixes for the labels, although I'm not using external journal drives. Is this ok, or should I label all the drives with "KOLLA_CEPH_OSD_BOOTSTRAP" ?14:24
k_mouzaby the way, I'm using the stable/ocata version of kolla14:25
egonzalezinc0, duonghq awesome title for a summit talk :)14:26
egonzalezk_mouza, for no external journal just use ``parted /dev/sdb -s -- mklabel gpt mkpart KOLLA_CEPH_OSD_BOOTSTRAP 1 -1``14:29
egonzalezk_mouza, however you can also label KOLLA_CEPH_OSD_BOOTSTRAP_OSD1, KOLLA_CEPH_OSD_BOOTSTRAP_OSD2, etc14:29
sdakemewald1 its past freeze time - i dont reallly ffeel confident merging code into kolla-ansible at this late stage - although someone more familiar with the code may14:29
sdakemewald1 what we need is a branch to unblock master - not sure what the schedule is for that14:30

jbadiapapbourke, on rhel there is only support for the software that is installed via rpm packages from the red hat repositories14:46
*** mewald1 has quit IRC14:46
jbadiapapbourke, so far the plugins are not on the redhat repos, so having then on the rhel image may create a misunderstanding that the software is supported by Red Hat14:53

sdakeprior to the patch does td-agent from wherever its coming from use some form of bundling?  how does it avoid the need to install plugins16:51
paramitesdake, it has it's own gem install installing their own versions of gems16:51

sdakeputting myself in paul's shoes, the intent of the kolla containers is really to standardize around one set of tooling that produces one set of images - be they proprietary (in the rhel case) or open source (in the centos case)16:54

openstackgerritMerged openstack/kolla master: Fix horizon start errors for binary images  https://review.openstack.org/48668117:06
sdakemy general take is that if people wish to build kolla images - they should ideally work with whichever deployment tools make sense for the operator - the act of distributing those images is largely the responsibility of red hat - if they choose to distribute incompatible images it shines poorly on kolla as a standard for communicating with openstack containers - on the other hand it really isn't my problem that red hat would choose to take such17:06
sdake action - it is red hats problem17:06
sdakewhat we agreed to originally in the vote on this topic is that when operators choose to build their own images - that they build properly on against the distro on which they are built - (properly implies working with kolla-ansible)17:07
paramitesdake, ok, understood17:08

kfox1111gotl seems to be written from the standpoint of making it easy for the go devs to implement, not a nice templating language to use. :/19:19

kfox1111you throw out all the helm distribution model if you only do it as a helm plugin.19:21
inc0well let me put it this way then19:22

kfox1111true.19:22

inc0it took long to switch because we were changing whole structure19:25
kfox1111yes, should be possible. last time we did took us about 4 months.19:25

inc0I'm not saying we're doing this19:25
kfox1111yup. and I'm just giving you info about it.19:26
inc0but let's explore all the potential routes and decide together19:26
inc0we'd need Red Hat help for sure, we can't affort to do it ourselves, but I think if TripleO people would be interested, we can get it done together19:27
kfox1111its totally doable. "its only a matter of code" :) . its more a matter of deciding if its worth doing and who would do it.19:27
inc0right now lets finish exploration of "how to make helm consume jinja2"19:27
kfox1111python module, and a tiller extension.19:28
kfox1111the python module can be pulled into ansible. the tiller extension for those that use helm natively.19:28
inc0or, alternatively, we can have client-side templating and container doing it19:28
kfox1111that throws out all the distribution / values stuff.19:30
kfox1111you might as well not use helm at all then.19:30

SamYaplei get where youre coming from19:46
inc0one idea would be to make helm understand jinja2 somehow19:47
inc0and allow ansible to render helm tepmlates natively19:47
rwellumsbezverk: same openstack commands - no changes? I'm guessing a pike change maybe. http://paste.openstack.org/show/616465/19:49
*** omenv has joined #openstack-kolla19:49
sbezverkrwellum possibly, we can check that tomorrow when I finish my training19:49
sbezverkif you need help19:49
*** jbadiapa has joined #openstack-kolla19:50
rwellumSounds good sbezverk meantime I will poke away at it. I tried a brand new VM in case that pointed to something, the root cause seems to be: "No valid host was found. There are not enough hosts available."19:51
SamYapleinc0: i talked to a few people about getting an ansible->tiller interface19:51
inc0yeah that'd be good19:51
inc0right now we're playing with -m command -a "helm install ..."19:52
inc0but that's prothesis19:52
SamYaplei mean tiller has an api... technically you could do a pull-and-compare and push up a new blob if there is a change19:52
inc0yeah I know, we're just playing around now19:53
sbezverkSamYaple helm tiller goes over grpc, does ansible support it?19:56
SamYaplesbezverk: not that i know of. this would be a module19:57
sbezverkSamYaple just curios then how it will communicate with it.19:58
*** kristian__ has joined #openstack-kolla20:00
SamYapleim not working on it sbezverk, but i can't imagine it would be too difficult. just lots of initial work20:00
sbezverkSamYaple yeah for sure, grpc needs to provide a library for ansible as it does for other languages.. anyway I was just curious..20:02
SamYaplesbezverk: there is python grpc im pretty sure20:02
SamYapleso it would just be a module like anything else20:02
sbezverkSamYaple right python has it for sure..20:03
SamYapleim confused then. ansible == python20:03
SamYapleso we should be able to communicate with python to tiller, therefore we can ansible to tiller20:03
sbezverkSamYaple it is not that obvious to me :) due to luck of knowledge in either..20:04
SamYapleoh i see20:04
SamYaplein ansible we can create modules that are pure python. imports and all20:04
SamYaplewe can then call those modules as tasks for doing things from the ansible code20:04
*** kristian__ has quit IRC20:05
sbezverkSamYaple I see that would simplify enormously this task20:05
SamYaple++20:05
inc0yeah, that's a good approach20:06
*** ducttap__ has joined #openstack-kolla20:06
inc0SamYaple: speaking of which, did you get helm-galera upstream anywhere?20:08
SamYaplehell no20:08
SamYaplei dropped that like a hot potato20:08
inc0lol20:08
inc0what happened?20:08
SamYaplei actually just got really busy20:08
inc0ok so it's not a bad idea, just lack of time?20:08
SamYaplepretty much20:08
SamYapleit was actually k8s 1.6 that killed my drive20:09
SamYaplei just didnt have time to keep up with k8s *and* make it do fun things20:09
inc0understandable20:09
SamYapleif you find out a way (and give me an example) of how to get one node to be able to communicate and retrieve information from others nodes (namely gvwstate and grastate.dat) then ill have a solution for you quickly20:10
SamYaplei just dont have time to figure it out right now20:10
*** ducttape_ has quit IRC20:10
SamYaplei got to the point of either writing a service (yuck) or doing an external api ectd thing, but that had lots of race conditions20:10
