ftarasenkoHi Ironic! Can someone help me with PXE Boot of DELL Server? I have server with OS installed and local boot enabled, when Ironic requests reboot of server with PXE Boot once for reprovision, it only tries to boot from first PXE adapter. Is it correct behaviour or it can be managed? I have PXE enabled on all  interfaces.10:11
ftarasenkoMy problem is that Ironic think that PXE intrerface not the first one, it's due to LACP fallback settings - server can be booted from both interfaces.10:12
dtantsurftarasenko: note that if you use ipmitool, we have no control over which PXE interface the node uses10:17
dtantsurwe can configure DHCP/PXE on different interfaces, but it's completely up to the node to boot from the right one10:18
ftarasenkodtantsur: so it has no option to force pxe boot from all interfaces, it can boot only from the first one?10:19
dtantsurftarasenko: ironic can tell the node to PXE boot. that's really it, the node's firmware decides how to implement that.10:20
dtantsurmost of hardware I've seen tries to boot from all interfaces, but apparently it's not the case for you10:20
ftarasenkodtantsur: I also seen this behaviour, but DELL server with UEFI boot enabled tries pxe boot only from one interface10:23
dtantsurftarasenko: you can wait for rpioso to wake up (he's in the USA) and ask him about Dell10:24
dtantsuror ajya if you know ^^^10:24
ftarasenkogood, thank you!)10:24
ajyaftarasenko: to clarify - you have all PXE devices enabled on hardware?10:29
ftarasenkoajya: that's correct, all pxe devices enabled. if I manually delete OS from server, it can successfully boot from second pxe interface10:30
ajyaftarasenko: is UEFI or legacy BIOS used?10:31
ftarasenkoajya: UEFI10:31
openstackgerritKafilat Adeleke proposed openstack/ironic master: Aliases for a few unfortunately named state transitions  https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/ironic/+/78489810:33
ajyaftarasenko: what's the sequence? It tries for 1st interface, fails because not configured? Then goes to booting OS? And in case when OS deleted, goes to 2nd interface that works?10:37
*** ociuhandu has quit IRC10:38
ftarasenkoajya: correct, if I ask PXE to boot once, it boots from 1pxe (not configured in Ironic) than OS. If no OS found, it tries to boot from second one, but it looks like more default boot order.10:42
iurygregorygood morning Ironic10:45
*** mkrai has joined #openstack-ironic10:45
ajyaftarasenko: ok, looks like boot sequence is setting only 1st PXE device at top. Are you using WS-Man or Redfish?10:46
ajya..or IPMI?10:47
ftarasenkoajya: I use wsman driver.10:48
ajyaftarasenko: I'll take a look if something can be done about this setup. I usually use the 1st device and set to whatever port needed, that's why haven't played around this. And maybe rpioso will have something to add later.10:51
ftarasenkoBut it seems that when I ask DELL server to boot from pxe via idrac console, it does the same - boot only from first pxe interface.10:51
ajyaftarasenko: also, which system are you trying on, in case that makes difference?10:51

dtantsurJayF: remember I touched upon the topic of explicitly supporting coreos? this is what came from it https://storyboard.openstack.org/#!/story/2008817 how appropriate do you find it?15:24
dtantsur(I'm asking you because I need an opinion from a non Red Hatter)15:24
JayFMy initial reaction is "why did CoreOS make their own" :(15:24
JayFbut of course they did, and I think I had that chat with one of their devs before they donned red hats lol15:25
JayF> This is similar to openstack, but the network_data will be treated as cloud-init user data. It will be written to openstack/latest/user_data as JSON with the required #cloud-config\n prefix.15:25
JayFthis just seems technically wrong15:25
JayFlike, I'm fine to do network-data (which is what I'd call it; not openstack) and coreos15:25
JayFbut that second option needs a strong, strong use case, because as written it just looks technically wrong15:26
JayFAh, this is trying to sneak in support for arbitrary cloud-init data, not just network-data, when customizing the deploy/clean ramdisk iso15:26
dtantsurI don't have a case for it, I added it for.. diversity?15:27
JayFSo let me ask the question at the core here:15:27
dtantsurwell, kinda-sorta. In a sense that ignition doesn't have a separate network data15:27
JayFhmm, yeah, that's where it's sticky15:27
JayFI am -2 to cloud-init data being hidden as node.network-data (option #2)15:27
JayFfull disclosure: I hate this feature in general so I'm probably 2 notches more negative than I should be :P15:28
dtantsurit's also not additive, which means that if I use ignition to launch IPA itself, I cannot "layer" network config on top of it15:28
dtantsurI need to merge these two, which means having non-network stuff in network_data (or finding another way of doing it)15:28
JayFwhy doesn't ignition have support for the open, pubilshed schema that OpenStack uses?15:28
dtantsur*shrug*15:28
JayFThat's my real beef with this, is it's us working around the lack of a feature in a non-openstack project15:28
dtantsurit doesn't even recognize configdrive's if platform!= openstack15:29
JayFyeah; to me that's the right place to fix this bug15:29
JayFmake ignition support standard configdrive data15:29
dtantsurthey don't see it as bug15:29
dtantsur(and yes, I also don't like the inflexibility that ignition folks show)15:30
JayFI mean, 'they' are wrong? I don't know how to have a technical discussion that I haven't seen lol15:30
dtantsurwell, there is no clear right and wrong here15:30
dtantsurOpenStack Network Data is *OpenStack* network data15:30
JayFReally? There's a format that predates CoreOS Ignition entirely, supported by OpenStack and published. There exist at least 3 different software products that can parse it.15:31
dtantsurdo you have any non-OpenStack reference to it? so far I could only find Nova docs15:31
JayFThat to me seems pretty clear that if ignition is to support openstack; it should become the 4th software product15:31
*** frigo has quit IRC15:32
JayFNo I don't have another reference to it, but it doesn't change that it's supported by all other players in this space -- cloud-init, cloudbase-init (I think it's got a new name now?), glean15:32
JayFthis is us doing something non-standard to support a single distribution15:32
JayFwhich seems like an antipattern15:32
dtantsurI don't disagree with it, but we don't have an incentive to make them change their mind15:32
JayFThat's a sad statement to hear coming from someone who works at the company that publishes CoreOS :(15:33
JayFBut I know how stuff like that goes sometimes15:33
dtantsurexactly15:33
dtantsurespecially since ignition pre-dates the acquisition15:33
JayFLike I said, there's a reason I have this argument at hand. I'm pretty sure I had it with a CoreOS dev directly years and years ago15:34
JayFIs there an upstream bug ticket where this discussion happened, that I can reference?15:34
JayFI'm going to summarize some of my thoughts in that RFE ticket15:34

JayFnot a -1 concern, just a curiousity15:56
dtantsurJayF: it's a much bigger change. I don't really want to throw people under the ansible driver if all they want is an alternative procedure to write images.15:57
dtantsurit's less well tested, supports only a subset of root device hints, etc, etc15:57
dtantsurJayF: in my case, I need only these 100 lines of code to make everything work: https://github.com/dtantsur/ironic-agent-image/blob/main/hardware_manager/ironic_coreos_install.py15:57
JayFI liked the feature better before I realized your intent is to use it to shell to other installers :D15:58
JayFMakes me almost wonder if this should be supported in the same way as the Anaconda driver is15:59
dtantsurI can imagine other folks doing other things15:59
dtantsuralso if you check the WIP patch, the new deploy interface ends up a clean parent to the existing deploy interface15:59
JayFbut I mean, run with only user-provided deploy steps is a clear next step, so I'm not -1 to the RFE, I just am worried we knocked down a dangerous wall with the Anaconda driver and now stuff is going to buffalo thru15:59
