lmcgann | the idea is that validate_security_status will make a call to the keylime verifier to get a status and then act upon it. The status that the verifier gives back will just be the most recent status attained. The idea behind the attest function is that it would trigger an attestation in that moment. Though I had been thinking about and looking into how 'attest' might work in keylime and the answer is it might not as it | 16:06 |
lmcgann | might bend too many workflows. | 16:06 |
dtantsur | lmcgann: it may be my lack of background, but "trigger an attestation" does not sound any different from what you describe about validate_security_status :) | 16:07 |
rpittau | lmcgann: my understanding is that validate_security_status will evaluate if running an attestation or not, while attest will trigger an attestation no matter what | 16:11 |
lmcgann | as it stands, the validate_security_status would just perform a GET to the verifier, which would then just return the state. Here no attestation is ever done. The verifier would have done it some time in the past. Having only this method would require the controller to constantly poll the verifier to see that the status is ok. The attest function we thought might involve the controller talking to the agent to instruct it | 16:11 |
lmcgann | to attest itself to the verifier. This would give us a super recent status. This idea was discussed way before with Julia but we all seemed skeptical it would really be possible. | 16:11 |
TheJulia | lmcgann: maybe, I _know_ there are some moc meetings next week and I think I'm already double booked for tuesday | 16:14 |

dtantsur | lmcgann: okay, left a few more clarification comments. I think once they're addressed, we can merge it. Do you think you could create a sort of a diagram with all interactions? | 16:15 |

TheJulia | why? | 16:25 |

TheJulia | bdodd: do you think https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/sushy/+/764229 will need backporting to any older releases? | 16:37 |
TheJulia | no, I think there is some confusion, the thought was that inside the state machine we end up calling the agent | 16:38 |
TheJulia | and then if we're checking the validator, then we would just query it | 16:39 |
TheJulia | I'm not sure why the agent would post aything back in that case, unless we're trying to support just trusting it. If it is a quick operation, it could be a sync call and we could just wait on the connection for the results like the way many existing commands work in IPA | 16:39 |

iurygregory | TheJulia, afaik nope | 18:07 |
bdodd | TheJulia My guess is that it should not need to be back-ported. The only places that do blocking requests are create_volume() and delete_volume() and I doubt that anyone is using those currently (until the RAID feature drops). | 18:10 |

jslater | Anyone have any experience using diskimage-builder inside of a container? Even in privileged mode, if I don't do a mount of the host system's entire /dev filesystem, i.e. -v /dev:/dev, then I will hit the error mount: could not find any device /dev/loop#Bad address. I'd like to avoid mounting /dev if at all possible and wondering if there was a better solution to that for automating builds in a container. | 21:10 |
JayF | Our internal build system uses containers; I ended up giving up and automating it against an openstack cluster to spin a VM -> do DIB build -> extract kernel/ramdisk -> shut down VM | 21:11 |
JayF | that is probably not a helpful answer, but good luck :) | 21:11 |
JayF | there is a dib-specific channel #openstack-dib IIRC | 21:11 |

jslater | Haha I like that workaround but I'll check over there if there's a way for it to work inside a container environment, thanks! | 21:15 |

clarkb | jslater: we run our nodepool builders with docker and they run dib | 21:21 |
* clarkb is finding the bind mount configs | 21:22 | |
clarkb | https://opendev.org/opendev/system-config/src/branch/master/playbooks/roles/nodepool-builder/templates/docker-compose.yaml.j2 <- we don't explicitly mount in /dev but it is a privileged container. These run in dedicated VMs though so we don't really care too much | 21:23 |
clarkb | the /dev/loop stuff is for creating loopback devices to mount the disks with | 21:23 |
