codyhillHey folks! I’ve been using Iroinc and it’s working pretty well for me. The next thing I wanted to introduce was vendor-data via cloud init. And it looks as though cloud-init doesn’t detect that baremetal deployments are OpenStack… So it never looks for the OpenStack datasource via cloud-init. Has anyone ran into this before? And if so. How did you fix this? Regular user data works since it defaults to EC2…00:32

dnukaIs this a design choice or there is a specific reason behind it :)11:49
dtantsurdnuka: I can only guess since I'm not an ansible developer, so take the following with a grain of salt. Ansible works by copying the requested modules to the target system, then executing them. Probably they copy the whole module_utils as well, so that you can use any module from it. But they probably do not copy all modules, so if redfish_utils was in remote_management, you would not be able to11:51

TheJuliaso.... if the underlying library does it for us, then \o/ otherwise /o\16:57
dtantsurwhy? we can use alternatives implementations for RPC16:58
TheJuliaI mean, yes, we could plug the entire intermediate interface16:58
TheJuliaThat is not a short term poc or "hey, could this help?"16:59
dtantsurTheJulia: I'm fine with a PoC as long as we're clear on that it's a PoC. I'm pretty sure people are trying to put that in production though17:01
dtantsurand I don't want to support it when people come to realize that it chokes on handling 100 nodes passively and there is no way to bump it..17:01
TheJuliafine then, we don't explicitly support it or we explicitly limit it. The scale people are wanting to run standalone ops at is completely different from the huge deployments that we shoot for in openstack.17:02
dtantsurWell.. people *think* that their scale is different. However, everyone has their own notion of "small scale".17:03

codyhillHey folks. I mentioned earlier that I’m having issues with Ironic and Cloud-Init actually recognizing that were are an OpenStack cloud and reading from the OpenStack datasource (http://169.254.169.254/openstack) TheJulia shared https://docs.openstack.org/diskimage-builder/latest/elements/cloud-init-datasources/README.html which I have incorporated. But it looks like thre is a “Discovery” mechanism in Cloud-Init that trys to detect OpenStack.19:50
codyhillall of these are false because they are looking for things from the virtual hardware: https://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/datasources/openstack.html  Has anyone else run into this? Regular userdata works since it’s using the EC2 datasrouce. But I’d like to use vendor data. Which requires the OpenStack datasrouce to work. Is there anything I can do in my image to force cloud-init to use this datasource?19:50
TheJuliaoh jeeze19:51
TheJuliaI've never heard of anyone running into this, but I'm kind of wondering if the criteria is a new thing19:52
jrolloh interesting19:53
jrollpeople using ironic tend to use configdrive, not the metadata service, IME. so maybe just nobody has hit it19:53
codyhillI can force a config-drive install and see if Vendor Data is seen there. I’ll report back in 10min (time for Ironic provision)19:54
TheJuliaThat is true, we do tend to recommend use of config drive as well since people... generally... don't setup or don't want the metadata addresses when working with baremetal19:54
TheJuliacodyhill: it should be19:54
* TheJulia awaits a release person tossing things at her for posting so many changes20:02
TheJuliatonyb: multiple stable release requests :)20:04
codyhillHmm… This is intersting. The vendor_data.json doesn’t get populated on the config-drive.20:07
TheJuliaohh, looks like my two ipv6 fixes that we need are on track to land in neutron20:07
TheJuliacodyhill: I take it in your case nova is the original requester of the baremetal node?20:08
codyhillYes. That is correct.20:08
TheJuliaI suspect this is quickly becoming an ask #openstack-nova question20:10
codyhillI have configured the vendor_data section in the nova.api section. Which added it to the metadata service. There must be something else needed to get this to work for the config-drive.20:10
codyhillTheJulia: Thanks I’ll jump over there and ask them. Thanks.20:10
