olivierb-good day everyone, I think I figured out what prevented the re-provisioning of a previously ironic/bifrost provisioned baremetal machine but need your advice on this12:46
olivierb-basically the 1st provisioning of the baremetal node works perfectly  when bifrost is installed from scratch12:46
olivierb-and the node is provisioned with a working ubuntu xenial lvm based dib image, no pb at all for this phase 112:47
olivierb-what I do next is remove the node from ironic (maintenance set + node delete), cleanup all links/entries in /httpboot and other locations so as to have a "almost" fresh bifrost setup12:48
olivierb-and I then try to re-provision the same node12:49
olivierb-what I experience and think the issue comes from is that, because the node has a bootable HDD from its 1st successful provisioning12:50
olivierb-the ipxe phase sometimes fails (timout, partial read, ...) and therefore it goes back booting to the next available method => hdd => 2nd provisioning failed12:50
olivierb-does this makes sense ? any of you experienced similar issue ? any clue on now to deal with this ?12:51
sambettsolivierb-: it for this reason we recomemd that other than for development you don't run with cleaning disabled12:51
olivierb-hello sambetts, what do you mean by cleaning disabled ?12:52
openstackgerritMerged openstack/ironic master: Collect periodic tasks from all enabled hardware interfaces  https://review.openstack.org/56389012:52
olivierb-the only things which I got working is cleaning the mbr of disk on machine but I do not consider this as proper way to go12:53
olivierb-I would expect the 2nd ipxe not failing at all12:53
sambettsIn ironic before a node becomes available (either from tear down or a new enrollment) it must go through a cleaning phase which destories any previous infomation on the systems disk preventing it being bootable12:54
olivierb-may be some tuning to do  in some configs ?12:54
sambettsor is it failing to clean the second time around?12:54
sambettsbecause of timeouts12:54
sambetts?12:54
olivierb-timeouts from what I can see12:54
sambettshttps://docs.openstack.org/ironic/pike/admin/troubleshooting.html#dhcp-during-pxe-or-ipxe-is-inconsistent-or-unreliable12:55
olivierb-it sometimes took 3 ipxe phases even in the 1st provisioning phase to get IPA loaded :-(12:55
*** Goneri has joined #openstack-ironic12:55
olivierb-not sure this can be avoided ?12:55
sambettsyour network device config can cause problems with iPXE and PXE, check that troubleshooting guide for more info12:55

sambettsI've had several problems with PXE either timing out and failing or taking several attempts due to spanning tree config on my switches12:57
olivierb-yep I thought about this too but our lab is hosted and we can not control switches, I'll still post a request to the support team to see if something can be done12:59
olivierb-thanks for the infos13:00

etingofTheJulia, most certainly13:48
etingofthough I am not yet convinced that's the problem13:48

olivierb-sambetts & others just for my information when does the cleaning is supposed to occur ? tried cleaning=true which leads to clean_nodes=true and automated_clean=true in ironic.conf, however after IPA correclty registered to Ironic, node is now in clean wait state but booted on the previously installed provisioning :-(. Strange14:51
*** dtantsur|brb is now known as dtantsur14:51
sambettsolivierb-: cleaning occurs when a new node is enroll when moving from manageable to available, or when an existing node is torn down, moving from active back to available14:52
sambettsolivierb-: it involves booting the ramdisk so I expect what has occured is that your node as failed to PXE to the ramdisk due to network issues, and fallen back to the HDD14:53
sambettsor your Ironic doesn't have good control over your server's boot device14:53
olivierb-deeply sorry but I must be missing something here. 1st (i)pxe boot loads IPA+associated ramdisk which seemed OK because I was under the tc_box prompt for a while before next reboot. During this time, node is in enroll state because it is unknown from ironic and just got discovered: so far so good14:57
olivierb-then what is supposed to happen successively ? for both manual + automatic operations ?14:58

sambettsafter discovery the node is added to Ironic in enrol state, you then need to move it to manageable from here you have two options, you can run manual cleaning via the API or move the node to available, if you move it to available and if automated cleaning is enabled when the node is moved from managable to available it will go through the automatic cleaning phase booting the ramdisk and wiping15:04

rpiosodtantsur: I read your ML email that proposes enabling automated cleaning on the undercloud. Will that require h/w type support to resolve the issues you identified in the email?15:12
dtantsurrpioso: nope, these are principal issues15:14
dtantsurof the cleaning process itself15:14
olivierb-sambetts ok seems to fit what I am doing because I have a small python/flask/shade agent which "automagically" moves the node from enroll to manageable (shade node_set_provision_state(uuid, 'manage') and then from there to available (share node_set_provision_state(uuid, 'provide') but may be I should use clean instead ? I am refering to https://docs.openstack.org/ironic/pike/_images/states.svg15:16
olivierb-does the clean occur within IPA ?15:17
sambettscleaning requires IPA to boot on the node so that it can wipe the disks15:17
olivierb-so you mean that there is a second reboot for IPA again after 1st IPA discovery boot ?15:18
olivierb-if yes why isn't it done within the 1st IPA ?15:19
sambettsyes when cleaning is run between manageable and avaiable, that is what the clean wait state it waiting for15:19
sambettsdiscovery is a completely separate phase that just discovers that a node exists it doesn't mean that ironic is managing it, moving it from enrol to managable is you accepting it to be part of your ironic cluster15:21
rpiosodtantsur: I ask, because the idrac RAID interface defines a couple of manual clean steps. If those were changed to be automatic, could that be beneficial when automated cleaning is enabled?15:21
sambettsif we wiped the servers during the discovery phase we'd potentially wipe all servers we discover exist regardless of if they are going to be accpted into ironic or not15:22
dtantsurrpioso: potentially. the current discussion is around at least enabling wiping hard drives15:22

TheJuliarpioso: thinking about it.... I think the proliant hwardware manager implements somethinga long those lines that wraps deleteing the raid config and recreating it15:27
olivierb-Ok I think I get the idea, so what is different in the second IPA boot that makes it behaves for cleaning and not for discovery ? why could'nt it receive call to do so without rebooting from ironic master once put by user in manageable state (may be because it's very lignthweight and/or only one way communication from IPA to ironic)15:28
olivierb-sorry for the very novice questions ;-)15:28
rpiosodtantsur: Would hardware interface out-of-band automated clean steps that wipe RAID volumes and hard drives be redundant with those performed by IPA?15:28
dtantsurrpioso: well, they'd be faster, right?15:28
*** rajinir has joined #openstack-ironic15:29
rpiosodtantsur: If by that, you mean the out-of-band's wouldn't require PXE booting the server.15:30
sambettsolivierb-: discovery is run by ironic-inspector not by ironic itself, in fact ironic knows nothing about discovery, it doesn't even know that IPA is already booted on the server as far as its aware its just turned on so it reconfigures the node and PXE boots it itself15:30
olivierb-ok makes perfect sense15:31
olivierb-thx15:31
rpiosodtantsur: I don't know if the wiping itself would be any faster. I hope it would be :)15:31

sambettsdtantsur, TheJulia: when Ironic is running in noauth mode what role does ironic match policy against??17:14
jrollheh, that's a good question17:15
TheJuliathat is17:16
TheJuliai feel like policy validation doesn't take place in noauth mode (which is a valid argument for another auth mode too...), but otherwise it would end up effectively being baremetal admin because we don't restrict in noauth mode as far as I remember17:17
jrollit would have to not take place, the roles come from the token17:18
jrollyou can't do policy without auth, it doesn't make sense :)17:18
sambettsthe reason I'm looking is because I want to enable "show_instance_secrets" in my bifrost env but wasn't sure if I could lock it down to only requests from certain people/locations17:19
*** pcaruana has joined #openstack-ironic17:20
TheJuliasambetts: yeah, at that point your talking about a new auth model which I would support17:21
TheJuliaspeaking of which, I thought up a case for another role the other day, I just haven't written it down17:21
*** dprince has quit IRC17:21
TheJuliaAnyone going to vancouver interested in doing some social gathering where we don't talk about work or technology? I'm feeling like a movie night would be fun17:23
sambettsyeah I'd like to be able to say only allow this data to be shown from requests on this subnet, but not to anyone else17:23
sambettsobviously not the most secure but it hides the info unless someone is being nasty and spoofing17:24
*** rpioso is now known as rpioso|eat17:26
TheJuliayeah17:27
TheJuliaWell, there are a few other sorts of attacks that could be leveraged easily without auth, but still17:28
sambettsyeah the scenario I want to enable is basically show all the things to my internal services, but not to the public API17:28
sambettsI guess I could spin up two APIs17:29
sambettswith different policy17:29
sambettsone internal and one external17:29
TheJuliawe've talked in the past about putting a switch into basically allow something along those lines17:29
sambettsactually two API services might be more secure because I can lock down the listening interface17:30
TheJulia++17:32
openstackgerritPaul Belanger proposed openstack/ironic-python-agent stable/queens: Stop using slave_scripts/install-distro-packages.sh  https://review.openstack.org/56429817:32
TheJuliayou could also do things like front them with basic auth with apache or nginx and proxy to the backend17:32
sambettsthat wouldn't let me have different policy though17:33
sambettsor do you mean have 2 API services like /barematal and /baremetal-admin17:33
sambettswhere baremetal-admin has basic auth17:33
TheJuliasambetts: well, it truly depends on how you do it, but yeah17:33
sambettshmm I like that idea17:33
TheJulianothing prevents proxying to two different backends17:34
TheJuliaand you actually can do all sorts of controls on properties about the requestor too17:34
sambettsyeah with WSGI params too17:35

mgagneis there a way to mark an ironic-conductor as in "maintenance" ? or will Ironic transfert ownership of a node to any conductor if one is marked as offline?19:07
mgagneok, looks like it's automated on startup/shutdown: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Ironic/ReleaseNotes/Icehouse19:11
