In https://github.com/openstack/ironic-python-agent/blob/master/ironic_python_agent/hardware.py#L537 the LLDP data is collected first, then we gather information about11:51

*** karthiks has quit IRC12:09
sborkowsdtantsur: of course, LLDP is optional, however, when there is a network card with that driver, the LLDP returns nothing, because it cannot connect to the card, since it runs its own LLDP agent12:10

lucasagomesdtantsur, nice! thanks for testing it on virt and bm12:16
sambettssborkows: yes, we can collect it, but we run our own LLDP client so we need to be able to receive the LLDP packets, if your NIC eats the LLDP packets before they reach the operating system then there is nothing we can do about that unless you can disable that feature on the NIC12:16
lucasagomesdtantsur, yeah, also if others need to dhcp another interface (not the one that got the first ip, for whatever reason) they can do so by edting the template12:17
lucasagomeswhich is the reason why we make it pluggable12:17

JayFdtantsur: automatically, that is15:22
*** rm_work has quit IRC15:22
JayFbuilding from source is easy; building from source with a given version of ironic-lib from git, not so easy15:22
dtantsurJayF, well, we need to pip install ironic-lib from /opt/stack/new/ironic-lib instead of normal pip, I guess15:23
dtantsuryeah, not a trivial change, as I initially assumed15:23
JayFwell I think that's done slightly different for each ramdisk15:23
JayFwhich makes it even tougher15:23
dtantsurJayF, we only run tinyipa on ironic-lib (I assume it's fine)15:25
sambettsJayF: I think modifying the IPA rquirements.txt ironic-lib requirement to point a -e "git://" would work for both coreos and tinyipa build15:25
JayFwell there's a couple of things here at play, we should consider, right?15:25
JayFif we release a broken ironic-lib, it will *not* show up in an IPA build in tarballs.openstack because it won't pass the gate15:25
JayFif we want to guarantee ironic-lib master will work with IPA, it sorta makes me wonder if we'd need to run the full gamut of ramdisk jobs against it15:26
JayFI'm thinking like, what if the coreos image has a newer parted with different output than tinyipa15:26
JayFfor instance15:26
sambetts++15:26
dtantsurwellllll.... and one day add DIB to the picture15:26
dtantsuryeah15:26
JayFyeah exactly15:26
JayFIt makes the status quo look not so bad15:26
dtantsurwe need to consolidate our jobs first, I guess15:26
JayFwhere if we release a broken ironic-lib, we will see ipa gates fail15:27
JayFand will have to release a fix15:27
JayFthat's not really that bad. IPA gate is already broken by more stuff, and has a lower cycle time15:27
JayFlike I sorta view breaking the IPA gate as not even like 10% as bad as ever breaking Ironic gate15:27
dtantsurthen it might be fine to only check tinyipa-based built.. and if we do break coreos only, then, well, fix it :)15:28

BIOS_HazardHello all!17:04
aNuposicHello!17:04
JayFo/17:04
BIOS_HazardI was hoping to have a few things clarified, and likely have followup questions.17:05
BIOS_HazardSo I have been reading up on Ironic and it seems pretty cool17:05
BIOS_HazardAm I correct to say that deployment requires that the target host has it's own disk? As in, it can't use a cinder-provisioned network volume to boot from?17:06
openstackgerritMathieu Mitchell proposed openstack/ironic-specs: External display drivers  https://review.openstack.org/30607817:06

JayFBIOS_Hazard: we haven't completed our plans for what we expect to get in our next release (Ocata), but given the design is nearly done I'd be surprised if it wasn't in the next release (but I have been suprised before :D)17:07
BIOS_HazardThank you for clarifying. Good, so I am now clear that it is not presently supported. Glad to know its being worked on. I was interested in booting from a networked ceph-backed block device.17:08
BIOS_HazardBut I see now that I would have to implement my own solution outside of openstack for the time being.17:09
JayFYou can look at the link to the spec for some of the scenarios we're working on, but we generally support Swift as a 'first class' storage backend17:09
JayFI would suspect Ceph support would be further out.17:09
BIOS_Hazard"First class"? Sorry, I am not sure what that phrase entails? Do you mean as a boot volume? Or maybe 'production ready general storage'?17:10

mat128BIOS_Hazard: it will operate with Cinder to abstract away what the cinder backend is17:12
BIOS_Hazardthat would be cool17:12
BIOS_Hazardi expect you would need much more abstraction to be officially implemented as 'a hacky ceph boot volume' doesnt sound like it would be adopted lol17:13

BIOS_HazardI would actually really like that. Was telling my buddies that if it wasnt already a thing, I would love to hand my resulting solution to you. Is that link my best bet for getting involved?17:14

TheJuliaBIOS_Hazard: so, CEPH backed might be difficult since, unless anything has changed in the last six months, the patches for network booting to ceph were being carried in a fork of dracut, not the main package which... is far from ideal for a semi-generic cross distribution solution.17:19

BIOS_HazardFrom my minimal research, it seemed feasible to load the needed modules in an initrd and simply mount the remote fs. I can see how it would not be 'ideal for a semi-generic cross distribution solution', but for my interests, I see an amazing opportunity to maximize efficiency in our datacenter by having these diskless hosts.17:23
BIOS_HazardBut I do understand that others have likely already put in a lot of work here and I would best be served to follow along before attempting anything17:24

TheJuliaBIOS_Hazard: So I'm basically targeting to build support for handling iscsi, fcoe, hba (fc/iscsi), and nfs, from iPXE.  The NFS path could... with a small downstream patch serve that purpose quite nicely.17:24
BIOS_HazardI saw NFS network booting! Ceph actually supports NFS so I could kinda fake it with that. Figured direct RBD support would be ideal.17:25
JayFyou successfully nerd sniped Julia, she's the expert on boot from volume so you've got the right person chatting with you now17:25

Seems to me that DHCP knows which which IP is set to which MAC so as long as you keep track of MAC:RBD-device, this lookup should be feasible and allow for a standard initrd. TheJuliaBIOS_Hazard: I guess that is feasible if the ramdisk knows where to look for information on where to mount the root filesystem from.  In essence, yes.  The examples I've all seen for booting off of RBD leverages command line args for the kernel that get read by the initial ramdisk tooling, and with that the arguments have been specific pointing to a specific18:36
TheJuliafor the ramdisk to switch the root filesystem over to.18:36

It's stored in /proc/cmdline and by that means, maybe you could configure the arbitrary authentication information into the grub boot ker19:03

TheJuliaIf you set it to latest, new nodes will default to enroll, which you can then walk through the state machine as expected/desired.22:20
dtrainortbh i think there's a fair amount of misunderstanding around that process.  long story short, we were doing things differently in the UI prior to newton than we had done on the cli, the actions weren't exactly the same.  now that mistral is involved and both ui and cli are using the same tripleo-common bits, we've seen a few instances where one method or operation was forgotten about or overlooked.  I believe this to be one of22:21
dtrainor them.22:21

TheJuliaYeah, the locked protocol version is not the most friendly thing to the workflow of enrolling a node :(22:27
*** rpioso has quit IRC22:27
dtrainorah my point behind that story is that the unification process between what ui and what cli was doing took a bit and a few things slipped through the cracks22:30
dtrainorno worries, we're getting there22:30
dtrainor(unrelated) at exactly what process would one need to configure boot images, e.g. openstack baremetal configure boot?  after node import before introspection?  is that the one and only time?22:31
