dtantsurmorning devananda, TheJulia12:53
devanandalucasagomes: I do not plan to use ironic with not-mysql ... but I see your point12:53
lucasagomesdevananda, we need to make it clear that the values on properties are limited to that size12:53
devanandadtantsur: g'morning!12:53

devanandalucasagomes: making properties.value a VARCHAR(255) would bleed the schema through to the API and be a visible change IFF anyone tried to store more than 255 chars in such a field13:00
lucasagomesdtantsur, http://paste.openstack.org/show/483752/13:00
dtantsurdevananda, lucasagomes, what if we have 2 fields: one varchar for simple fields, and then 1 for extended data of JSON type?13:01
devanandaI don't know if anyone is storing long strings in a property today -- but we clearly support it13:01
lucasagomesdevananda, yeah, that's the problem with that approach... the only field that I think that could may use more than 25513:01
lucasagomesis the capabilities13:01
lucasagomesbut there's an idea to have it split out as well, so it won't become a problem13:01
lucasagomeswhat is scary is that, today, people could have a unlimited length string in properties... so a change like that could potentially break those users13:02
devanandaright13:02
dtantsurthe second possible solution is to move only known fields13:02
lucasagomesdevananda, another idea would be to have those properties we want to filter on as node fields13:02

lucasagomesdevananda, splitting capabilties?13:04

devanandathat's a huge breaking change to ALL clients13:06
devanandaand I don't think it has a very high gain13:06
lucasagomesyeah, I agree13:06
devanandamy original thoughts on this were to do it with little to no API changes13:07
lucasagomesyeah, the current patch does it with no API changes at all13:07
lucasagomesbut performance is the problem cause things are not indexed13:07
devanandaI'm not worried about performance in sqlite13:08
lucasagomesI think the varchar(255) is not too bad, cause we can index it for all dbs13:08
lucasagomesbut def needs to be well communicated13:08
devanandaand sqlalchemy can handle "if backend == sqla, skip <thing>" so I'm not worried about a lack of support there13:08
devanandalucasagomes: some dbs support varchar(65535)13:09
lucasagomesdevananda, but indexing it would consume a lot of space no?13:09
*** rcernin has joined #openstack-ironic13:09
devanandain mysql at least, it's almost worse than TEXT because it gets stored in the data page (whereas TEXT goes into a separate BLOB storage)13:09
lucasagomesI see13:10
devanandalucasagomes: again only speaking of mysql, you cant index the full length of varchar(65535) -- only a prefix13:10
lucasagomesyeah, mysql handles it nicely (even for TEXT with that index prefix)13:11
lucasagomesso maybe we just need to say in the spec that filtering will be optmized in mysql, and other db engines will lack performance13:12
devanandayea, I think varchar(255) is the best we can do right now as far as compatibility13:12

raddaouiHi everyone, I am new to Bifrost/Ironic and I need some help! I am trying to deploy an image inside my new Intel NUC. So I installed Ironic standalone version using bifrost inside a VM and then I configured the ip address and network for amt inside the NUC.19:47
raddaouiI can see that the NUC detects that there is a dhcp and a PXE server inside my VM but then when I enroll/deploy the image using the playbooks. everything works fine and it says node activated but then when I open the NUC nothing is there and when I see with ironic node-list command, it says deploy_failed19:47
raddaouiany suggestions!19:47
JayFlast_error on the node should be set to something19:49
JayFthat will be key to determining what went wrong19:49
gmmahajroll: thanks.. we will test it out and see how it goes.19:50

raddaouithansk JayF . It says during sync_power state max retries exceeded. do you have any idea what's that. I can access AMT webinterface with my browser but when I try with amttool command line it dosen't work. do you think that may be the problem because I am using the amttool driver to deploy the NUC19:55

lucasagomesjroll, do we? Don't know, I think we have it for properties and driver_info20:14
lucasagomesjroll, but those are tricky due the mysql thing20:14
lucasagomesjroll, with capabilities I want to limit the value to VARCHAR(255) and get it indexable already (without relying on index prefix)20:14

lucasagomesme devananda and dtantsur|afk talked today's morning about having properties to be VARCHAR(255) as well, and have the properties indexable too20:15
