praneshphello ironic02:53
praneshpwhen I do an ironic node-create and pass some properties (using the -p option), I don’t see them show up on the nova compute side02:53
Haomeng|2praneshp: morning02:58
praneshpHaomeng|2: hello!02:58
Haomeng|2praneshp: that is used by Ironic I think02:59
Haomeng|2praneshp: so what is your question02:59
praneshpso ironic help node-create says this02:59
praneshp  -p <key=value>, --properties <key=value>02:59
praneshp                        Key/value pairs describing the physical02:59
praneshp                        characteristics of the node. This is exported to Nova02:59
praneshp                        and used by the scheduler. Can be specified multiple02:59
praneshp                        times02:59
praneshpi expected that the propertis are somehow transferred to nova, and if I set extra specs in the nova flavor, I could use that as a way to schedule03:00
praneshpbut I took a look at nova hypervisor-list, the information passed to —properrties doesn’t seem to transfer over03:00
jrollpraneshp: you want -p capabilities=something03:01
jrollexample, capabilities=boot_mode:uefi,cap2:value203:01
jrollthose should match against extra_specs03:01
praneshpjroll ah, ok. can you explain the difference?03:01
jrollpraneshp: no difference, just that the capabilities key is what we use to schedule against extra_specs03:02
praneshpjroll: ah, got it. Thanks a lot. trying out now03:02
jrollpraneshp: and for example we schedule -p cpus=2 against the scheduler filter for number of CPUs03:02
praneshpjroll: that worked. thanks!03:03
*** vishwanathj has joined #openstack-ironic03:03
praneshpjroll: got it. the nova side looks for specific keywords, and you can pass those via  -p03:03
jrollcorrect :)03:03
praneshpyou could write your own filter to look for ‘foo’ and pass -p foo=bar03:03
jrollindeed03:03
praneshpthanks!03:03
jrollno problem :)03:03

JayFBadCub: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/176395/ has been advertised in nova several times. We can't get anyone to core-review it. Mind taking a shot? It's got +10 in +1s and no core reviews.15:11
BadCubJayF: sure!15:12
lucasagomesJayF, yeah nova takes a while to review stuff... It seems that only a niche of cores in nova actually looks at the ironic patches15:12
lucasagomesmaybe pinging them directly?15:13
BadCubI just pinged in channel15:14
JayFlucasagomes: I mean; I don't know who they are or really have time to do that today. That should /not/ be a requirement to get code reviewed though, especially with such a simple patch and 30% of theIronic core team +1'ing it15:14
JayFlucasagomes: I also know mikal and dansmith was pointed directly at this patch and didn't put a vote on it15:14
lucasagomesJayF, right... yeah I just advertised it again in the nova channel15:15
lucasagomesif not I will see if I can ping some red hat nova people to take a look at it15:15

raminenilucasagomes: tnx15:18
JayFramineni: I pretty much agree with everything lucasagomes said in that patch + I have a couple more things15:20
JayFramineni: basically you're breaking the hardwaremanager API with that change15:20
JayFramineni: it's *supposed* to encapsulate all errors in errors.IncompatibleHardwareMethodError because that's what dispatch_to_managers() expects15:21
lucasagomesramineni, look at L434. I'm ok with raising an exception, but then we need to handle that properly in the places that the method is invoked15:21
JayFlucasagomes: I'm basically thinking I'm OK with the whole patch, if the except ... : block continues to return False rather than raising15:22
lucasagomesJayF, yeah that would be simpler indeed15:23
JayFcommented + -1'd15:24
*** rameshg87-away is now known as rameshg8715:25
rameshg87JayF: one question in raminenis patch15:29
rameshg87JayF: the point of argument was shred is not supposed to fail for any device for any *real* reason, so how do we know about those (unless we log it and someone checks IPA logs)15:30
JayFrameshg87: Because by that shred method returning False, it ends up raising IncompatibleHardwareMethodError in the parent method (the one actually called in cleaning) which indicates that it failed15:32
JayFrameshg87: the problem with raising in that method is that it prevents someone from being able to do something like, add a method that dd's zeros and have that tried if shred fails15:32
*** athomas has quit IRC15:32
JayFrameshg87: or other similar fallback stuff. Look at erase_devices() method that calls the shred method in question15:32
*** killer_prince has quit IRC15:32
rameshg87JayF: hmm okay. i understand the concern now.15:34
rameshg87JayF: but may be some means to propagate the error might be useful15:34
JayFrameshg87: I'd suggest logging there; but the idea is that failure is OK15:35
JayFrameshg87: for instance, should we propogate the error that secure erase wasn't possible?15:35
rameshg87JayF: may be when there is a real way to see ipa logs from outside, it will be helpful15:35
*** Marga_ has joined #openstack-ironic15:35

JayFthat's a really good point23:01
jrollyeah23:01
jrolljust set the prio23:01
JayFalthough without a way to get that turned on via Ironic23:01
JayFit'd require a custom hw manager in the agent to enable that clean step23:01
jrollit's via config23:01
jrollwe can do that in ironic23:01
jrollsame way we disable erase_devices for the agent23:02
JayFThat's a one-off priority change23:02
jrollor set agent erase_devices in ironic, I should say23:02
JayFwe don't support that for arbitrary agent steps23:02
jrollwell, then we should figure that out :)23:02
jrollor something, idk23:02
JayFI think we should land this as-is, but we need more than just this to do automatic raid config23:02
jrollmaybe an agent config23:02
jrollwhich is kernel cmd line23:02
jrollwhich is easy23:02
JayFbut there's no need to hold up this spec for that use case anyway23:02
jroll+123:03
jrollland it with wild abandon23:03

jlvillalJoshNang, JayF: What version of pip is being used in the IPA CoreOS part?23:25
JayFjlvillal: pip never runs inside coreos; we build a Docker container based on Ubuntu Trusty, then export that FS and use it as the base for the container23:26
jlvillalLooking at: http://logs.openstack.org/32/176832/4/check/gate-tempest-dsvm-ironic-agent_ssh-src/e156a5c/logs/devstacklog.txt.gz#_2015-05-07_22_21_51_92623:26
jlvillalNot sure if python-requests being updated is causing issues with it?  Seems to be pip 1.5.2, which seems old.23:27
jlvillalBut I don't know enough about what is going on there.23:27

JayFin one of the packages pip is trying to install23:28
JayFwhich is... concerning23:28
jrolluh23:28
jlvillalJayF: clarkb seemed to think the linecache2 was just line noise.23:28
jrollwhat's the chance 15.04 shipped py3 by default23:28
JayFjroll: Why does 15.04 matter?23:29
jrollbut yeah, might be noise23:29
JayFjroll: our container wouldn't magically update itself :)23:29
jrollJayF: because I'm not sure if our docker file is FROM trusty or FROM ubuntu23:29

JayFI'm... suspicious23:30

jrollcould be23:30
jrollwe should probably pip install -U pip in the dockerfile though23:30
