fricklerconfig-core please have a look at https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/project-config/+/861035 in order to make upper-constraints generation more aligned with the current PTI. the change is low-risk as the proposed updates currently need manual amending every time anyway due to several open issues10:08

opendevreviewGhanshyam proposed openstack/openstack-zuul-jobs master: WIP: Migrate OpenStack tox base jobs to Ubuntu Jammy (22.04)  https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/openstack-zuul-jobs/+/86111622:13
clarkbgmann: You've marked that WIP until you test all the projects. Having done these transitions before myself it was that expectation that osmeone is responsible for testing everything before moving that caused me to not want to do it anymore. Instead I'd pick a date (probably after the PTG) and just switch it22:17
opendevreviewGhanshyam proposed openstack/openstack-zuul-jobs master: WIP: Migrate OpenStack tox base jobs to Ubuntu Jammy (22.04)  https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/openstack-zuul-jobs/+/86111622:18
gmannclarkb: since xenial migration, we have been doing testing first and then switch the base jobs. That way we can have smooth migration. 22:19
gmannthat work fine and less breaking in projects gate22:19
clarkbthe problem is it takes all cycle to switch22:20
clarkband it creates an expectation that it is someone elses job to make the updates happen22:20
clarkbanyway I'm not doing it so won't stop you. I left a comment on the change about jammy not having python 3.9 so it needs updating22:20
fungisometimes it's taken more than a cycle to switch, and we've ended up with some projects still only working on the old distro at release time, which is frankly embarrassing22:21
gmannnot all cycle, we can plan the switch during mid or during R15 or so which give projects to test on jammy for ~1.5 month or so22:21
gmannwe will not wait for during end of cycle22:21
gmannor may be m-1 can be good time.22:22
fungigmann: just note that any jobs which are relying on the default nodeset now will switch to ubuntu-jammy in about 2 weeks from now22:22
fungiper the announcements to the ml22:22
gmannyeah, but most of the jobs are based on devstack/tempest/openstack-tox based which is what we are testing before we migrate them22:22
fungiright, those are setting the nodeset explicitly, so require a change to switch them22:23
gmannyes22:23
fungijust pointing out that opendev waited to update the default until openstack finished zed, plus a brief delay so people didn't need to scramble to fix jobs right before or during the ptg, but the week after the ptg the default will update22:24
gmannyeah, I think most of jobs are not impacted with opendev migration but yes there might be few cases22:25
clarkbfwiw the tooling allows projects to test ahead of time before an announced switch. And it is possible to do spot checking (this is what I did with ansible 6 swap for example). It isn't perfect, devstack-gate broke. But other than that I havne't seen a lot of issues and I'm ok with breaking devstack gate instead of testing it22:27
clarkbBasically do some due diligence but testing everything has frequently created massive problems so I warn against it22:27
fungiwell, and more to the point, waiting for everyone to be ready for a switch is intractable for a community the size of openstack22:29
JayFI like the approach of "break things at the best possible time" over "trust people to eventually make things work", because we have stacks and stacks of evidence that just because the work exists to do does not mean someone will do it until it's blocking them.22:32
fungiby which time much of the context about that problem has been forgotten22:37
* JayF looks sadly at his stack of "CI: Zuul does not respect Queue param" PRs22:40
clarkbalso python3.10 is fast22:41
fungivroom!22:41
clarkbwe've got zuul python3.10 unittest jobs running consistently around 40 minutes now22:41
funginot fast to compile though (i'm recompiling now for yesterday's new release(22:41
clarkbpython3.8 doesn't go below an hour really22:41
clarkbfungi: 3.11 should be releasing soon too iirc22:43
clarkbI wonder if I can update zuul to 3.11 to take advantage of the even faster vrooms22:43
clarkbcouple of weeks away22:51
opendevreviewGhanshyam proposed openstack/openstack-zuul-jobs master: WIP: Migrate OpenStack tox base jobs to Ubuntu Jammy (22.04)  https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/openstack-zuul-jobs/+/86111622:58
fungiclarkb: yeah, i've been testing my personal projects with 3.11 alpha/beta/rc versions all the way back to when it branched from 3.10, and i have seen a bit of speedup23:17
fungibut it will really be workload-dependent23:17
clarkbya I'm just hopeful given the great results zuul ha salready seen from 3.1023:18
