mnaseroh um00:07
mnaserdoes 'recheck' just run gate jobs only inside opendev?00:07
fungiwhich zuul tenant?00:08
mnaserthe actual opendev one00:08
fungiit depends on the pipeline config00:08
fungiyeah, the opendev tenant doesn't enforce "clean check"00:08
mnaserokay, cool well now i know that at least nothing is wrong there :)00:08
clarkbsame thing will happen if you approve a change before it is checked00:09
fungior approve it with a verify -1 present00:09
openstackgerritIan Wienand proposed zuul/nodepool master: Add a dib-cmd option for diskimages  https://review.opendev.org/67219600:09
mnaseroh okay good to know00:10
* mnaser has been exercising opendev a fair bit as a user :)00:10
fungiexcellent!00:13
fungiand yeah, the whole "clean check" situation was implemented long(ish) ago to deal with the insanely long gate queues openstack suffered, to keep people blindly approving broken changes from making them even worse00:15
fungithere was a time when zuul worked the way it does again now in the opendev tenant00:15
fungieven better, the new supersession feature which just got added means that if you push up a change and it starts testing in check, and then you approve it, it's dequeued from the check pipeline and those builds aborted to more quickly free up the resources00:16

mnaserthe only wish i have with opendev is being able to put holds on my own changes00:20
mnaseresp working on kubernetes conformance tests that fail in weird ways but dont provide a lot of info on whats going on00:21
clarkbmnaser: usually that is an indication that the job needs more logging00:22
clarkb(whcih of course may be hard to know what to log if you don't know what is going on)00:22
clarkbbut is good input to the jobs as things are sorted out00:23

efriedclarkb: Sorry I'm being dense, but how would we go about doing that?15:27
clarkbyou'll need to update the job. You could probably add a post-run playbook that grabs additional logs (and if we think that is broadly useful we can push that back into the normal openstack-tox-py* jobs15:28

efriedclarkb: And (I think I've asked this before and the answer was a resounding nfw) is there a way to make a patch land on a particular provider?15:30

clarkbfungi: tl;dr is atom created based on python default on platform. That way you can say install python-foo on python2 platforms and python3-foo on python3 platforms instead of listing them all out manually18:15
clarkb(this presumes you are fine with the default python version too which for a lot of software isn't the case)18:16
clarkbI think it is fine for those that can run under 2 or 3 just fine18:16
fungii guess it depends on hard-coding what versions of what distros preinstall what versions of python?18:16
clarkbya its got rules in there based on versions18:17
clarkbI've approved it18:17
fungithat seems like it would be a bit of a treadmill to keep on top of18:17
clarkbzbr: I think adding tests like that as frickler suggested would be good and when those are all happy we can make a release18:17
clarkbfungi: All of the supported distros except for osx have made the python3 switch at this point18:17
clarkbfungi: so I think we are mostly ok there18:17
fungii'm still not sure what "default" means in this case18:18
clarkbfungi: for example https://wiki.debian.org/Python#Supported_Python_Versions18:18
clarkbon rhel 7 default is python2.7 but you can get a 3.x from software collections18:19
zbrdefault is a by loose term, is. more of preferred or recommended.18:19
clarkbon rhel 8 it is python3 but you can get a python2 if you really need it18:19
clarkbmost of the distros have expressed an opinion on what their "default" is and that is what this chagne encodes18:19
fungihrm, that debian wiki article also doesn't define what they mean by "default"18:19
zbrwith one notable exception: suse which does not recommend any version. but i will let them decide on behavior.18:20
fungiDebian Buster contains Python 3.7 (default), 2.718:20
zbrdebian did a great job documenting that.18:20
fungidoes "default" mean "this is guaranteed to be preinstalled"?18:20
fungithat's what i *think* it means in debian's case anyway18:21
*** kjackal has quit IRC18:21
zbrnot really: minimal docker images do not have python on almost any distro.18:21
clarkbfungi: I think so18:21
fungithough technically python is not preinstalled on base debian package sets18:21
clarkbzbr: well if you ignore specialized images I believe that is the case18:21
fungipython-minimal is (and lacks most of stdlib)18:21
zbri think that default = it will be installed in standard/basec install18:21
clarkbif you download a normal server or desktop iamge from the distro that is the python version present18:21
*** jtomasek has quit IRC18:21
clarkbzbr: yup that18:21
fungii still don't see what's wrong with declaring in your bindep list that you require a particular python interpreter package18:22
*** kjackal has joined #openstack-infra18:22
fungi(modulo ther eneeding to be at least some python interpreter present to run bindep itself)18:22
clarkbfungi: I think the main concern is that some platforms (rhel7 and 8 for example) are largely disjoint and have no overlap18:22
clarkbas a user you have to work really hard to get one or the other18:23
clarkbbut if you are software that supports both you just want to run on whatever the platform supports18:23
clarkb(this is the same problem that has tripleo testing on fedora 28 fwiw)18:23
fungibut how does that determine package selection for those distros in ways which couldn't just already be considered distro-version-specific package selection?18:23
zbrthis feature is very useful for testing, where you may want to tell bindep to install both (or just one if you support only py3 for example)18:23
clarkbfungi: it means you can say rhel python2 and rhel python3 then not care as a user where the distinction happened18:24
zbrthe main reason why I went for adding this new atom was because the decision to go for py2 or py3 would not the one of the project owner.18:24
clarkbfungi: its mostly a shortcut so that users don't have to go lookup what rules debian has and what rules rhel has18:24
zbrsome may go for one, some for another.18:24
clarkbfungi: that and I don't think bindep lets you express < > relationships18:24
zbryes, is a shortcut for avoiding very verbose bindep.txt files.18:24
clarkbso you will ahve to explicitly list every release if you go that route18:24
zbrnopo, no ranges supported.18:25
*** jtomasek has joined #openstack-infra18:26
fungiskimming the change it seems odd that python is being treated as a "platform" when up to now that has been represented by the distro family/version18:26
clarkbfungi: I believe that is how bindeps language works18:27
clarkbwe could extend the language but ugh18:27
fungigranted the distro families were classified based on the names of their low-level package spec (rpm, dpkg)18:27
clarkb(if someone understands parsely that would be a good thing to do probably)18:27
fungiclarkb: bindep's "language" currently supports profiles for platforms and user-defined strings, but could be extended for other kinds of profiles as well18:27
clarkbfungi: yup if you understand parsely18:28
clarkbwhich is apparently easier than yacc so maybe not to bad18:28
*** altlogbot_3 has quit IRC18:29
clarkbmaybe attribute:base-py2 instead?18:29
clarkb(this is unreleased so we can improve it if we need to)18:29
fungianyway, i'm not opposed to the change, i'm still unconvinced of the use case, and note that this means needing to encode awareness of python major versions preinstalled for distros as well as overloads the "platform" profile class in ways which will need to be maintained more or less forever even if we decide to add additional classes for stuff like python major versions later18:29
clarkbfungi: its not too late to -W it18:29
fungiit sounds like enough other people think it's a good idea i won't oppose its inclusion18:30
clarkbI do think being able to easily write rules that apply to a range of distro versions is worthwhile18:30
clarkbbecause writing out rules for trusty xenial bionic and fedrao 27 28 29 30 and rhel 7 and 8 and so on is quickly painful18:30
*** davecore has joined #openstack-infra18:31
clarkbwhereas you could probably do [platform:dpkg platform:base-py2] and [platform:dpkg platform:base-p3] to cover all debuntu cases and similar for all red hat cases18:31
*** rlandy|ruck|brb is now known as rlandy|ruck18:31
clarkb(not necessarily sold on the specifc deatils but I think being able to do that easily is useful)18:31
fungiyeah, on the other hand supporting numerical inequality operators in platform tags also seems like it could address a lot of this18:31
clarkbbut as with fedora-28 standing in for rhel 8 all of this would be simpler if distros did more gap bridging packaging for tools like python18:33
fungiotherwise we're opening the door to classifying platforms based on any arbitrary transition they might undergo18:33
fungikeeping in mind that bindep isn't a python-specific tool, it just happens to be implemented in python18:33
*** bnemec has joined #openstack-infra18:34
clarkbyup though typically distros will do aliases and you never notice that the cron implementation changed18:34
fungido we also entertain future suggestions for what versions of haskell a platform provides? or pulseaudio, or emacs?18:34
clarkbpython is weird here beucase so many distros use it on the distros18:34
clarkbfungi: I expect that it is really only a problem for language runtimes?18:35
clarkband only where there are multiple choices on a platform18:36
*** jtomasek has quit IRC18:36
fungiseems like it could be equally appropriate for major library transitions or compiler versions or..18:36
clarkbI don't think emacs or pulseaudio comes with multiple versions on distros18:36
clarkb(maybe gentoo does that because gentoo)18:36
fungidebian can have multiple glibc versions present, multiple gcc versions, and so on18:37
clarkbright but emacs?18:37
fungiit was reducto ad absurdum18:37
clarkblibc is an interesting one because you can't just swap it out without changes to the system typically18:39
fungito be fair, bindep was not invented to handle distro packages of python software, it was designed to fill the gap we experienced with python software needing non-python software (mostly libraries and headers) due to c extensions. it was however not intended to exclude the possibility of also being able to say that your software requires a specific distro-packaged python library, of course18:39
fungioh, during glibc transitions you can totally have different applications built against different glibc versions on the same system, they just can't link each other afaik18:40
*** jtomasek has joined #openstack-infra18:41
clarkbya I guess my point was more that you aren't likely to have bindep install a different libc unless you know you need that specific libc. Otherwise you'll likely want to use whatever is already on the platform18:42
clarkbwhich I think means your bindep rules for libc would be simple?18:42
clarkbeither you always require $libc or you don't specify it18:43
