lpetrutHi. Is anyone else interested in having a config option for the chunk size used by the FS driver? I have a trivial patch for that: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/603023/10:48

jokke_lpetrut: I was looking that, but I'm not convinced we want to add yet another config option for something we don't support for production use anyways13:40
lpetrutjokke_: are there any concerns about using it in production? We're thinking about using the FS driver with SMB HA shares (Scale-Out File Servers, planning to use Windows hosts as well)13:43
lpetrutit fits quite well within our hyper-converged setup, where we use those SMB SoFS shares for Cinder volumes as well. The idea is to have small clusters of <15 Windows servers, all providing storage via Storage Spaces Direct (a Microsoft SDS solution), on top of which we have those distributed shares. So, having the image files next to the instance files and Cinder volumes is really convenient.13:47
jokke_there are few concenrns like it's really not that resilient13:50
jokke_if you have any problems with the share mount, glance drops it to read-only and only way to recover from that is to restart the service13:50
jokke_it's similar situation as Cinder with the LVM driver ... we know it works and it's one of the most tested backends as we use it in lots of our automated testing it being so simple to set up, but at the same time it lacks lots of the rigidness and performance you get from the other drivers13:52
lpetrutmakes sense, although it would be nice to keep this option open. for what is worth, the SMB protocol is quite resilient, supporting transparent failover and durable handles, making it worth considering and actually requested by our customers. Unfortunately, the linux kernel support for HA SMB shares is quite limited at the moment, for which reason we're looking into getting Glance to run on Windows.13:58
jokke_yeah ... tbh one of the biggest reasons we want to keep the statement of the fs driver not being for production use is all the issues backing it up with NFS is causing13:59
jokke_the resiliency and performance just sucks so badly that we don't want to be dealing with that14:00
lpetrutthat's understandable, that's why we're pushing on SMB 3 (plus, we have to, since we're using Hyper-V)14:01
lpetruthaving mixed setups14:02

lpetrutso going back to that patch, it's much more convenient to be able to set the chunk size rather than having to fiddle with the mount cache settings (some older versions of the cifs module don't even allow us that)14:05
jokke_I'll have a chat with the rest of the cores next week how they feel about that (thanksgiving really blocks this week)14:10
lpetrutthat's great, thanks14:11
