Underknowledge | Hi! Just trying out the ansible AiO install for homelabbing. Having a issue with keystone on stable/victoria [os_keystone : Create database for service] fails me because of /openstack/venvs/utility-22.0.1.dev8/bin/python: No such file or directory. Followed the quickstart so far without real customisation. Did I missed a step where I had to setup the venv? | 22:03 |
jrosser | Underknowledge: could you paste a useful chunk of the output at paste.openstack.org? | 22:05 |
Underknowledge | here you go @jrosser http://paste.openstack.org/show/802163/ | 22:08 |
*** MickyMan77 has joined #openstack-ansible | 22:10
jrosser | and does /openstack/venvs/utility-22.0.1.dev8/bin/python exist or not? | 22:13 |
Underknowledge | nope. just re running the 3 main setup plays, maybe that ll fix it everything I did so far http://paste.openstack.org/show/802164/ | 22:16 |
jrosser | stable/victoria does not support centos7 | 22:18 |
Underknowledge | found that out too 😄 currently running 8.3 | 22:19 |
jrosser | i think installing epel-release probaly voids your warrant too :)] | 22:20 |
jrosser | *warranty | 22:20 |
Underknowledge | Just like ncdu - wich warranty? 😛 | 22:21 |
jrosser | you should be able to start with a fresh cloud-image VM, run boostrap-ansible and everything you need should be done | 22:21 |
Underknowledge | *which, when I finnaly learn this | 22:21 |
jrosser | i have no idea what the consequence of adding the epel repo is as we don't do that in CI, nor document it as a requirement | 22:21 |
jrosser | we add it during the deployment but with lists that only allow the very specific set of required packages | 22:22 |
jrosser | you've also used pip to install pip on the system python | 22:24 |
jrosser | thats really not cool and again i can't say what the consequence of that will be | 22:24 |
jrosser | you should never mix distro provided python packages with things installed natively with pip | 22:24 |
jrosser | Underknowledge: i would start again with a clean environment and only do what the documentation says, if something doesnt work it's likley a bug | 22:25 |
Underknowledge | pip complained during bootstraping. so I just updated it. welll, I ll probably reimage that thing again and try it out without epel and pip, 3 reimages today anyway 😄 | 22:26 |
jrosser | no, that was pip in the /opt/ansible-runtime venv saying that there was a newer version available | 22:26 |
jrosser | but for extremely good reason we pin the version of pip to something specific | 22:26 |
Underknowledge | uffff was not aware, but thinking of it.. makes sense. | 22:27 |
jrosser | we take whatever python/pip comes from the distro packages | 22:28 |
jrosser | then use that to build a venv at /opt/ansible-runtime, and inside that venv the python tooling is upgraded to exactly these versions https://github.com/openstack/openstack-ansible/blob/master/global-requirement-pins.txt | 22:28 |
jrosser | so there is a totally known and defined python runtime, which is independant of whatever mess you get from the distro | 22:29 |
jrosser | you can turn this stuff over very quickly in a VM, 8G ram 60G disk 4 or 8core is plenty | 22:30 |

Underknowledge | coming from kolla-ansible wich is working awesome at work, but the sweet sweet DeskMini X300 does not have multiple nics 😅 some stumbling blocks on the way | 22:35 |
jrosser | well OSA just takes a different set of choices really | 22:35 |
jrosser | the AIO will work fine with a single nic but there are some built in compromises as it's really a CI tool (it's exactly what we use to test / merge code) | 22:36 |
jrosser | the fake external network is NAT on the host for example | 22:37 |
jrosser | you can change that if you like later to make a flat or vlan external network through that single nic | 22:38 |
*** maharg101 has quit IRC | 22:39
jrosser | also i think kolla have a plan for what to do with centos8-stream, we as yet dont | 22:39 |
jrosser | so if you are needing to use centos beyond centos8 EOL then i kind of have no answer | 22:40 |
Underknowledge | lucky for me that sane defaults are set already. but first time I touched lxc. reasonable choice to set up a nat. flat ll be probably my coice for a couple of things. really really wondering if I'm able to get Home Assistant running in OS | 22:40 |
Underknowledge | well wondering the same, but so far I dont care. maybe there will be a good binary compatible choise for centos 8 soon (tm) | 22:41 |
jrosser | that is why we are stuck, the things we need from epel currently dont work with centos8-stream as there isnt binary compatibity any more | 22:42 |
jrosser | when you get to systemd or kernel things you can't just add epel and expect things to work | 22:43 |
