admin0is that keepalive for tenants ?14:33
admin0or for the openstack APIs ?14:34
admin0if for the openstack API endpoints, 1500 is still very high14:34
mjwalesFor the tenants (I think) an example is: keepalived -P -f /var/lib/neutron/ha_confs/393446c4-4e2d-473b-8129-8660abd74736/keepalived.conf -p /var/lib/neutron/ha_confs/393446c4-4e2d-473b-8129-8660abd74736.pid -r /var/lib/neutron/ha_confs/393446c4-4e2d-473b-8129-8660abd74736.pid-vrrp14:34
admin0ok .. for the tenants14:35
admin0then i guess you simply need to upgrade the RAM :)14:35

mjwalesadmin0, okay maybe more RAM would help. What I don't understand is why so many keepalived processes are running where there are only 200 tenant networks14:44

admin0i mean replication14:44
admin0mjwales, take one router, and then from your admin rc run  neutron l3-agent-list-hosting-router $router-uuid and see how many routers are there14:46

jamesdentonjrosser I see your bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-ansible/+bug/178073315:18
openstackLaunchpad bug 1780733 in openstack-ansible "Neutron rootwrap error" [High,Triaged] - Assigned to David Wilde (dave-wilde)15:18
jrosseryeah that was a looong time ago15:19
mjwalesThe only warnings that show up in the neutron log are: Bad interface line: ad_partner_oper_port_state 63: IndexError: list index out of range15:22
mjwalesneutron-linuxbridge-agent.log to be exact15:22
jamesdentonyeah. you can ignore that15:23
mjwalesIs there anyway to force the agent to resync?15:25
jamesdentonyou can restart he agent, but it would likely not mess with any existing (stale) processes, since it doesn't know anything about them anymore15:26
jamesdentonit might be helpful to create a new router, and delete that router to see if things hang around and if there's any associated error15:26
mjwalesCreating a router creates a directory in each of the control nodes (ha_confs) with a file state (each contains backup). Deleting the router removes the state file but leaves the directory behind15:31
jamesdentonis there still a process?15:32
itandopsany suggestion to my questions guys ?15:33
jamesdentonitandops looks like your questions didnt come thru15:33
mjwalesjamesdenton: no process15:34
jamesdentonmjwales that's good, i guess? I would have to check a similar environment to see if the directory is left behind. have to find one, first. Is this a prod env?15:35
mjwalesThis is prod15:36
mjwalesThe question is how to clean up all the routers that have been left behind that no longer exist in OpenStack?15:36
mjwalesOtherwise the nodes are going to consume all their memory again15:37
jamesdentonfor now you could try killing the stale processes. If you have a way to replicate the behavior, with steps, processes, etc. then i recommend opening a bug15:38
mjwalesjamesdenton: thanks! Will do some cleaning up and see if the problem reoccurs15:38
jamesdentonhaving those keepalived processes hanging around after the router has been deleted is not (or should not be) expected behavior15:38
itandopsjamesdenton My question is in case where we deploy behind a physical load balancer.15:47
jamesdentondid you have a specific question? If15:52
jamesdenton*if you did, i didnt see it15:52
admin0mjwales, you can also say your compute nodes are also network nodes ( if networking is the same )15:53
admin0then your controllers will not get overloaded15:54
admin0while you delete and add again15:54
mjwalesadmin0: will bear that in mind the infrastructure cannot be touch now for 3-4 months as it is used for teaching15:55
admin0mjwales, do you have an extra node that you can make temporarily a network node ?15:55
admin0just to make sure you do not run out of memory15:55
admin0and distribute the routers to that node15:56
mjwalesNot at the moment :(  only the three controller nodes have an uplink to the outside world15:57
admin0well, I  thought of some options.  A. add more ram to the controllers ( one at a time)   B. reduce the HA mode to non HA .. C. if HA is required, maybe write a script and run via cron so that instead of 3, keep only 2 running    D. buy a network card .. add it to one of the compute nodes, make it as network node, redistribute the routers so that full ram is not used  E. rethink the networking .. maybe use direct DHCP so that you do not even15:59
admin0have to create routers in the first place15:59
admin0can't think of other ways on how i would approach this16:00
mjwalesadmin0: Thanks for the ideas! More RAM is definitely the easiest to do so will take a look down that route first :)16:01

admin0we have a few OSA clusters serving 800+ people .. i never run network on my controllers .. i distribute them to compute nodes which are out of schedulers and where i manually migrate either big or very long running workloads .. that way, i know my controllers and network node keeps running fine16:03
admin0and in other, which has almost no SLA, all compute nodes are also network nodes .. so there is never a big impact or a total impact16:03
admin0best part is the use of provider network that is not floating ip but direct dhcp . this removes the need of creation of routers and namespaces and keeps the networking resources down16:05
cshenadmin0: you meant that in your env, you don't use openstack router?16:06
admin0it is used, but only by 20% of the people16:07

admin0if all that your users need is connectivity, then floating ip, network, router is an extra unnecessary step for them to do .. as well as extra resources for you to manage and maintain16:10
admin0downside .. they delete the VM, the ip also go16:11
admin0but we run designate, so when they create a vm say web, it becomes  web.username.domain.name and they can just ping/ssh to that name instead of thinking about ips16:11
