CeeMacquick question, when changes are required to a configuration file. Would you say it was better practice to update the user_variables file and run the appropriate playbook rather than manually editing the config file?10:10
CeeMacalso, i noticed on some of the documentation there are separate install and config tags, presumably the *-config tag cuts out a lot of the tasks in the playbook to just adjust the config?10:12
CeeMacmaybe not so quick a question >_>10:12
jrossernever edit the config file10:12
jrosseryou should be able to add everything you need, using config overrides10:14
CeeMacok, thats a fairly straightforward mantra to adapt :)10:14
jrosserand if you edit by hand it will all get undone when you do an upgrade10:14
CeeMacah, yeah, also a good point10:15
jrosserCeeMac: this is handy documentation https://docs.openstack.org/openstack-ansible/rocky/reference/configuration/using-overrides.html10:18
*** aedc has joined #openstack-ansible10:18
jrosseropenstack-ansible makes extensive use of config_template which means that there does not need to be a variable to override for every possible var in every config file, that would be totally unmanageable10:19

CeeMacjrosser, wrt to tags e.g."The nova-config tag can be used to manage configuration"10:23
CeeMacis that something i add at the end of the playbook line, similar to limiting hosts/groups?10:23
jrosser--tags nova-config10:24
jrosserand you can use that in conjunction with --limit as well10:24
CeeMaccool10:24
CeeMacpresumably that makes config changes more efficient than running the whole playbook?10:25
jrosserthat is the idea, yes10:25
CeeMaccool, thanks.  Sorry for the n00b questions :)10:26

CeeMacindeed :)12:17

CeeMaci already have an override for nova_console_type in user_variables, not sure if the two methods are mutually exclusive?12:17
jrosseruse a config override when there isnt a role default for the thing you want to change12:19
jrosserso for nova_console_type there is a default here https://github.com/openstack/openstack-ansible-os_nova/blob/master/defaults/main.yml#L32112:19
jrosserjust put a var overriding that in your user_variables12:19
jrosserif you find you need to change something that isn't expressed through role defaults, thats when to use a config override12:20
CeeMacright12:21
CeeMacand you can do both right?12:21
CeeMacone doesnt preclude the other12:21
jrosserand if you need to do it for specific hosts or groups, there is group/host vars in your /etc/openstack_deploy folder12:22
CeeMacthis is what I have in my user_variables.yml related to nova right now: http://paste.openstack.org/show/744665/12:22
CeeMaci used the same format for the cinder conf overrides and that ran through fine12:23
jrosserif it is not applying that make sure that the task templating out the config file is not skipped12:23
jrosserthere may be issues in the code meaning it's not quite doing the right thing with --tags12:25

CeeMacnot sure which task relates to templating the config12:26
jamesdentonyeah it's in nova_post_install, which doesn't look like it's being invoked12:26

odyssey4mecloudnull jrosser I have discussed the plan for switching to the standalone repo for config_template from the plugins repo. I will push up a bunch of patches today, but -w them until they're all passing tests - they will all have to be in a working state otherwise we will break the world.13:29

vollmanmnaser: I'm going to continue to look into it also.  just curious if someone knew what changed. I can manually create VMs and ssh to them so it is specific to centos and tempest13:30
chkumar|ruckmnaser: once clonned we are setting the path here https://github.com/openstack/tripleo-quickstart/blob/master/ansible.cfg13:31
mnaserchkumar|ruck: seems good then :D13:31
odyssey4memnaser nice to see you have some work in the wings to make use of consul and such - we should discuss that at the next PTG. It probably makes sense for us to switch from only using ansible to use other tools where they're best suited - for example, use ansible to prep hosts and push out the software, but use consul for config file changes.13:31
odyssey4meHowever, we *may* wish to try and make that opt-in... although the tech debt would be considerable I think.13:31
mnaserodyssey4me: yeah, right now it's nothing but an aio that i'm hacking on and seeing where we might fall short or not13:31

evrardjpoh btw did you see that ansible finally embraces dw 's mitogen work13:33
mnaserodyssey4me: a lot of interesting things i learned from it like how you can bootstrap a rabbitmq cluster using consul.. a lot of our code would be less complicated that way :P13:33

odyssey4meevrardjp yeah, saw that - nice to see that progressing into real change in ansible13:35

CeeMacjamesdenton, see when an instance has a floating IP on an external/public network. does a/the router proxy-arp for the floating IPs, or does the network node handle arp responses?14:16
chkumar|ruckodyssey4me: I have just passed this change, it is not related14:16
odyssey4mehttps://github.com/openstack/heat/commit/8ae5f8657b2bdf841bdf114b49839700c2ee924f14:16
jamesdentonCeeMac In a standard linuxbridge-based setup, there's really no proxy-arp involved. The floating IP is configured on the qg interface inside the router namespace. Normal ARP behavior applies14:17
odyssey4mechkumar|ruck ok, so we need to change the egg name in os_heat, and in th eintegrated repo to match the new name14:18

CeeMacjamesdenton, ok thanks14:19
jamesdentonor some variation14:19
CeeMacjust trying to work through external access workflow so i get my nat/routing/policy right14:19
CeeMaci have a /22 for the external network, but want to allocate a /28 with a static prefix NAT on our edge firewall14:20
CeeMactrying to work out if i need a static route, or if normal arping will resolve the packet path14:20
CeeMac*sub /28 of the /2214:20
jamesdentonHmm, well the expectation is that if you configure a /22 external provider network, then the edge device would have an SVI to match. Whether you implement NAT on the edge device is outside the scope of Neutron - it will be NAT'ing floating IPs to fixed IPs.14:21
jamesdentonYou can implement a /28 floating IP network with a /28 on the edge device. And if you outgrow that, stack an additional subnet on the existing network14:21
jamesdentonnot all device support that, though (looking at you, Cisco ASA)14:22

CeeMacyeah. i've kind of purloined a network i'm using for something else for this RC/POC and wanted to restrict its impact to the top end of the range to avoid conflict14:23
CeeMac"You can implement a /28 floating IP network with a /28 on the edge device" as in set up a new provider network for floating IPs seperate to the existing one?14:24
evrardjpmnaser: osa has a plan for py3, you can ask odyssey4me :p14:24
mnaserevrardjp: i missed the fosdem ptg14:26
mnaser:(14:26
jamesdentonWell, sort of. You have a provider interface (e.g. physnet1) that can potentially service multiple external provider networks using different VLAN IDs (if it's a trunk, that is). So for each network, you would have a corresponding SVI or L3 interface on the edge device. BUT - let's say you have a single network using a /28. You can stack an additional subnet on that network using its own CIDR, but it would be on the14:27
jamesdenton same VLAN. On a router, this might appear as a 'secondary' IP on the existing L3 interface.14:27
jamesdentonSo if you outgrow the existing subnet, but want to continue using the same provider network/vlan, you simply add a new subnet14:27
CeeMacah, ok, yeah i'm doing that already in this network14:28
CeeMacfor the "other" use case14:28
evrardjpmnaser: lol14:29
CeeMacso i would just need to update the "public" network in neutron to the /28 and changed its GW to the additional IP on the edge SVI14:29
*** irclogbot_0 has joined #openstack-ansible14:29

CeeMacwas thinking i could use a floating IP pool, but apparently thats only available for compute v2 network14:30
odyssey4memnaser once the python build simplficaction is done, we can switch each service that supports py3 to py3 individually - right now it's all or nothing14:30

mnaserconsidering rhel8 isnt out yet, or we don't know when its gonna be out14:32
odyssey4memnaser yeah, I figure that with the changes in place we can leave centos on py2 and switch suse/ubuntu to py314:32
odyssey4meit'll be easy enough with a map, I think14:32
jamesdentonCeeMac You you create an 'external' provider network, the IP range specified in the 'allocation pool' of the respective subnet(s) == the available floating IPs that can be associated14:34
jamesdenton*When you create...14:34
CeeMacohhhhhhhhh14:35
CeeMacsee, that makes sense14:35
jamesdentonFor an external provider network, be sure to disable DHCP on the subnet if you don't plan attaching VMs directly. Then you should get anywhere from 11-13 usable IPs14:35
CeeMaci'd been thinking that just going to be used for router addresses14:35

jamesdentonWell, it is also true that each router you create will also grab one of those IPs14:36
CeeMaci only needed a handful of IPs for basic testing14:36
jamesdentonthe router needs one, and then the rest are for floats. But each router you add subtracts one14:36

CeeMacafter the shennanigans i had with the last iteration of the environment i split the roles out14:38

jrosserin the simplest possible case the external VIP could live in the provider network outside the allocation pool14:40
CeeMacjrosser, yeah, that makes sense14:41
jrosserbut you might want to future proof yourself (or allow router ACL for example) by creating a specific subnet for api endpoints14:41
CeeMaci've put the external VIP and a completely seperate DMZ for simplicity14:41
jrosserreally up to you how you want to cut that14:41
CeeMac*on a14:42
CeeMacso the provider network is purely for neutron14:42

CeeMacyes, apparently14:43
CeeMacsorry, that was a lazy question, my dashboard was literally on the other screen14:43
jamesdentonyep14:45
CeeMacbut there doesn't appear to be a way to choose which allocation to assign an IP from14:46
CeeMachmm14:46
CeeMacI'll manually create few floating IPs and assign them up to the project for testing14:47
CeeMacin production i'll be looking at exposing public addresses directly to neutron anyhow14:47
jamesdentonyeah it's automatic. BUT, you can choose a particular IP using some flags on the create command14:48
CeeMaci'm doing everything through the UI right now, as  I imagine thats how most of our current customer base would be driving it (when its released)14:50
