CeeMacjamesdenton, jrosser: as discussed yesterday - https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-ansible/+bug/181468610:32
openstackLaunchpad bug 1814686 in openstack-ansible "host_bind_override issues for br-vlan network provider" [Undecided,New]10:33
*** slaweq has quit IRC10:33
jrosserCeeMac: great that it works - i have exactly the same problem with the vlan interfaces only existing on the network hosts10:36
CeeMacjrosser, I remember chatting with you a while back about your environment, it sounds very similar to how I'm hoping to get mine up and running10:36
jrosseryeah, i have seperate hosts for pretty much everything, network, haproxy, infra and so on10:37
CeeMacactually, seeing as you're here :)  what are your thoughts/understandings on performance/stability of l2pop vs multicast for the vxlan communication10:38
CeeMacjust wondering if its worth my time batting my demons and looking at implementing multicast in the core for this, are there other elements that would benefit from it to?10:38
jrosseri am using multicast, no experience directly with l2pop other than thinking it's a bit wierd10:38
CeeMachaha, weird how?10:38
jrosserwell, just replicating something thats inherent in vxlan, feels more like a historical workaround in opnestack rather than a "proper" thing10:39
jrossermaybe i'm too much of a purist there :)10:39
jrosserif you ever want to interoperate with a physical vtep in a switch for example......10:40
jrosseranyway, i have a routed network, you need to watch out for multicast ttl must be > 110:41
jrosseri put the tunnel networks in their own VRF on the switches so i only have multicast configured there, not universally10:41
CeeMacthats a good shout10:42
CeeMacwhat switching gear are you using?10:42
jrosserusual PIM + anycast RP on my spine switches, fairly standard10:42
jrossernexus 9k10:42
CeeMacah, ok10:42
CeeMacbig boy switches :)10:42
jrosserif you find a cisco or juniper reference for setting up vlxan overlay even without openstack all the same stuff holds10:43
*** shyamb has joined #openstack-ansible10:43
jrosserhowever for a small setup you can easily do it in one switch just with igmp snooping turned on10:44
jrosseri would highly recommend using the asmping tools to verify you've got everything working properly10:45
*** hwoarang has quit IRC10:47
CeeMacunfortunately, although i have dedicated compute for the environment its still connected over the production core switch (juniper)10:47
CeeMacso yeah. i'll need to check the docs for vxlan with multicast in a routing-instance10:47
CeeMaci'll keep a note of the asmping tools10:48
CeeMaci like the simplicity of l2pop, but for production i'd worry there would be an overhead10:50
jrosseri've always wanted to leave the option open interoperating with a hardware vtep, so i've stuck firmly to standards based stuff10:51
jrosserbut it depends entirely on your use case10:52
jrosseruse what works for you :)10:52
CeeMaci like to future proof new platforms i'm working on10:52
CeeMacthere is definitely scope for breaking out into physical networking10:52
CeeMacjuniper integrates well with openstack for RaaS, FWaaS etc10:52
CeeMacand i try to adopt an open standard approach as well, where possible10:53
CeeMacbut for this RC, I'm happy with the "make it work now" approach due to management pressures for a working demo10:53
CeeMaci'll trying to keep notes on things to loop back on for production and "best practice" implementation10:54

jamesdentonThanks, CeeMac. The bug report looks great and I'll work on some docs soon and send them your way for review, if thats OK12:24
CeeMacno problem. yeah, happy to do that12:26
jamesdentonAs for l2pop vs multicast - There has been some overhead and caveats to l2pop in the past. One of my major grievances was the difference in behavior between linuxbridge and OVS. Namely, that if for any reason the FDB entry did not exist for a given MAC, then traffic would just be dropped. What this meant was that in the event the agent didn't properly program the entry, nothing went anywhere. With OVS, at least, the12:28
jamesdenton traffic would be broadcast as a last resort and an FDB could be learned. At the time, this was a limitation of the kernel module and there were workarounds implemented IIRC (to also help with allowed address pairs). Anyway, we defaulted it to off in OSA around the Mitaka timeframe IIRC. But it's necessary if you don't have a working multicast setup12:28
jamesdentonjust enabling igmp snooping may be enough to get it going, i don't remember12:29
CeeMacyeah, i think i'm going to have to bite the bullet and jump in to multicast setup12:30
CeeMaci know there are a few other systems we have that could benefit from it if i can implement it correctly in a controlled way within virtual routers12:31
CeeMacas an aside, on the LB/OVS front, is OVS still a pre-requisite for distributed VRs12:31
jamesdentonYes, OVS is required for DVR12:32
*** samc-bbc has quit IRC12:32
jamesdentonwe've got some folks using OVS within OSA, along with DVR, that i think are getting along well12:32
CeeMacthey can be set up concurrently in the same environment albeit it on different hosts right?12:33
jamesdentonAs in, LinuxBridge and OVS in the same environment?12:34
CeeMacyeah12:34
CeeMacor is that only true in a non-osa driven build?12:34
jamesdentonYes, that is doable, albeit not really tested beyond the lab, at least for me anyway12:34
jamesdentonThe mechanism to deploy it that way looks a lot like what you did yesterday12:35
jamesdentonI think where things could get hairy is in the routing12:35
CeeMaci'm still stuck in the do-it-quick vs do-it-right duality.12:35
jamesdentonTo me, there isn't much to gain in a dual setup like that in production12:36
CeeMaci have 1 compute node on LB right now, to get up and running. Was thinking I could slot in a second one on OVS and transition across maybe?12:36
jamesdentonunless you're transitioning or something12:36
CeeMacyeah, this would be transitional in the RC12:36
CeeMacin prod I would go OVS if we decided to go with DVR12:36
CeeMacnot sure if there is a benefit of OVS over LB in general outwith the case for DVR?12:37
jamesdentonWell in that case, yes, you could do that. There are a couple of user_variables to implement, too, but it's fairly straightforward12:37
CeeMacis that document or can i just ping you a message if/when i come to it?12:37
jamesdentonWell, feature-wise DVR is the one that immediately comes to mind. There is also the benefit of OVS firewall driver vs iptables.12:38
jamesdentonyeah, just ping me12:38
*** slaweq has joined #openstack-ansible12:38
CeeMaccool, thanks12:38
jamesdentonYou can also get DPDK w/ OVS down the road12:38
jamesdentonIf I have some free cycles I'll throw up a blog on how to do it so there's something to reference12:38
CeeMacthat would be great, if you had the time12:39
CeeMacI'll probably park the networking config decision for a little while as I have a few other things to get through to provide a "limited production capable" demo12:40
CeeMacwhich I'll no doubt be back on here to ask for help with at some point :)12:41
jamesdenton:)12:41
jamesdentonjrosser Re: LB + VPP. I spent some time on this recently, and the issue I'm coming up against is that while it's possible to enable multiple mechanism drivers, getting OSA to run the respective provider tasks is tricky. For something like LB+OVS, those mech drivers are built in so it's not a problem. Same goes for adding sriovnicswitch or l2population. When it comes to something like VPP, there are pip packages that12:45
jamesdenton need to be installed not only on the compute node but within the neutron-server container.12:45
*** markvoelker has joined #openstack-ansible12:46
jamesdentonRight now, neutron_plugin_type is expected to be a single value "ml2.lxb, ml2.ovs, ml2.vpp, etc", and this code block includes the respective task file: https://github.com/openstack/openstack-ansible-os_neutron/blob/master/tasks/main.yml#L77-L8612:46
jamesdentonI'm soliciting advice on how to process that as a list, and iterate thru the elements and include the respective file(s). I'm running into the issue of a loop-within-a-loop, though12:46

CeeMacthat'd be good. the diagrams, although good, seem very genericised14:27

CeeMacand it can be tricky to try and map a non-generic scenario through them14:29
CeeMaccertainly in my experience14:29
CeeMacalthough I understand the need for homogenousity (if thats a word?)14:29
CeeMaccompletely unrelated question, config file overrides can be done in user_variables.yml right? or through individual .yml files in the environment directory? (/etc/openstack_deploy by default?)14:31
jamesdentonit just sorta depends on how you want them applied, generally or to a host or groups14:32
jamesdentonbut yes, they often go into user_variables14:32

CeeMaccool. thanks, i'll look at that15:41
jrosserthis is a useful example of that role being used too https://github.com/openstack/openstack-ansible/blob/master/tests/roles/bootstrap-host/tasks/prepare_networking.yml#L16-L13715:41
CeeMaci wanted to try and adopt netplan as "its the way forward" and I wanted to keep things vanilla as far as possible, but it seems to cause more issues than it fixes15:41
CeeMacjrosser, is that from the aio?15:42
cloudnullthat said, if you need ifup/down on 1804 you can install the iftools with `apt install ifupdown`15:42
cloudnullthough I would strongly suggest moving away from those if at all possible15:42
jrosseralthough i have to say networkd is not a silver bullet, you are at the mercy of the systemd version and there is a whole chunk of my life i will never get back from trying to make that work on bionic15:42

prometheanfirehttps://paste.pound-python.org/show/EfVfZEGFgV9LisqsFH1R/ is a bit cleaner21:59

prometheanfirethat?21:59
jrosserthe termcap entry22:00
prometheanfiredoesn't look like it22:00
jrosserwe've seen this a few times - i've never encountered it to dig though22:00
prometheanfirehmm it is a fact though22:01
jrosserbut somewhere the termcap contents ends up in a var which is then templated22:01
jrosserand all sorts of brok then occurs22:01

prometheanfireour instructions state to use screen22:04
prometheanfireTERMCAP=SC|screen.xterm-256color|VT 100/ANSI X3.64 virtual terminal:\22:04

redkriegHello all, I've been having trouble with setting up ml2.ovs.  the neutron-openvswitch-agent.log on the compute node indicates that my bridge does not exist, but the bridge does show up under brctl show.  If anyone has time, I've put together what I think are the relevant config lines and logs: http://paste.openstack.org/show/744597/23:32
