openstackgerritMarkos Chandras (hwoarang) proposed openstack/openstack-ansible-lxc_hosts master: DNM - Testing experimental openSUSE jobs  https://review.openstack.org/47819308:06
LiterateHawkMorning/evening all! If I want to add provider networks (with linuxbridge), am I required to add values to user_variables.yml? If I take them away, I get: "{{ _provider_networks }}: '_provider_networks' is undefined"08:06
LiterateHawkThe docs themselves don't mention it, but commenting/uncommenting the "neutron_provider_networks" section appears to break/unbreak the playbook. I'd like to take the role defaults, however...08:09
andymccrLiterateHawk: the provider networks are specified in your openstack_user_config.yml they define the physical networks you have and how they should be mapped to the containers.08:23
andymccras an example here is a sample configuration setup that is more in line with "production" environment: https://docs.openstack.org/project-deploy-guide/openstack-ansible/draft/app-config-prod.html#production-environment-config08:23
LiterateHawkandymccr: I guess that's my confusion. Somehow, if I don't also set it in user_variables.yml, the playbook fails with the error above. I figured it was worth asking because the docs didn't make it seem like it was necessary08:28
andymccrLiterateHawk: ahh - that shouldnt be needed, something has gone wrong there08:28

LiterateHawkandymccr: I just realized when I was runnin the os-neutron-install.yml, I was limiting to just the neutron server container to speed it up, so tha tmight be why the fact didn't recalculate08:56
andymccrLiterateHawk: ahh ok - did it work without the limits?08:56

*** jamesdenton has joined #openstack-ansible08:59

LiterateHawkI don't particularly care about tenant networking, it just made the tutorials line up a bit better to have the extra nics lit up09:05

jamesdentonLiterateHawk what is the end result you're looking for?16:48
LiterateHawkjamesdenton: I have two nics, the existing network and a separate nic I'm using for tunneling. I want to use the first nic as a provider network (basically the 2nd scenario in the networking guide)16:55
*** dxiri has joined #openstack-ansible16:56
jamesdentonIs the one NIC also used for host_net and container_net?16:57
LiterateHawkThough I don't particularly care too much about self-service networks. The provider network is what i'm really wanting16:57
LiterateHawkjamesdenton: Yes, the containers and the hosts are using the same nic/subnet, etc..16:58
LiterateHawkThe 2nd nic is only being used for vxlan tunneling16:59
jamesdentonSo in our environments we may have 2 NICs (or bonds). NIC1 is used for host mgmt and br-mgmt, and NIC2 is used for br-vlan and br-vxlan. This is one of least complicated setups. If you use NIC1 for mgmt and provider networks you have to do one of two things: tag the mgmt interface -or- be limited to a single flat provider network17:00
LiterateHawkPresumably NIC2 is connected to your provider network?17:01
jamesdentonyes. So NIC2 (eth2) would sit in br-vlan, and eth2.X would sit in br-vxlan. That means VLAN X is used for VXLAN, and the other 4093 VLANs can be utilized/tagged by Neutron17:02
openstackgerritMarkos Chandras (hwoarang) proposed openstack/openstack-ansible-lxc_hosts master: DNM - Testing experimental openSUSE jobs  https://review.openstack.org/47819317:02
LiterateHawkGotcha. Yeah, we don't really have a need fo multiple provider networks. We have a large network, and 99% of the time we'd simply like the instances to be connected to that network17:06
*** firebat has quit IRC17:07
LiterateHawkjamesdenton: So, I think (?), I need to tell neutron/linuxbridge_agent that "br-mgmt" is connected to the existing network with "physical_interface_mappings"17:08
jamesdentonThere's a risk of overthinking the design and putting yourself in a position where it's hard to expand later. Right now a single network may be all you need, but if you go the flat network route then you limit yourself in the future. We may only leverage 2-3 provider VLANs, but still let Neutron due the lifting via tagging.17:11
andymccrLiterateHawk: ahh you are right lemme fix17:12
jamesdentonYou can look at this example to see a very basic, but common scenario where Neutron has VLANs 45-55 'available for allocation'17:13
jamesdentonhttps://gist.github.com/busterswt/bb200f5491dc5c463e84971e4ea406c417:13
jamesdentonthe interface connected to br-vlan would be eth1 in that example, and Neutron can tag the VLANs and it gets carried down. Even 1 VLAN would work.17:14
LiterateHawkjamesdenton: Thats good advice. I've been trying to read up what I can find, but honestly I still don't have a firm grasp. In my case, I thought adding VXLAN tunnels would satisfy the ability to use more networks in the future17:14
jamesdentonWell, it gives you the ability to create networks, sure, but they are limited to that particular cloud and have to be connected to a Neutron router to provide access in/out17:16
jamesdentonAdding provider VLANs allows you to connect to physical infrastructure. Plug VMs directly into those networks or use them as external nets for neutron routers.17:17
openstackgerritMarkos Chandras (hwoarang) proposed openstack/openstack-ansible-tests master: Vagrantfile: Add openSUSE Leap 42.3  https://review.openstack.org/48752917:21
LiterateHawkjamesdenton: OK, that's helpful. I had dismissed using vlans because the existing infrastucture is .. baroque. Both ports are untagged. If I were to add br-vlan like you suggest, would I have to untag the ports?17:26
LiterateHawkThis is a PoC, so I was really trying to find a solution that involved the least infrastructure changes17:27
jamesdentonWithout VLAN tagging, the configuration become a bit more... limited. Ideally, you would break out each of the networks into their own VLANs.That includes infra and Neutron-related networks for instances17:27
LiterateHawkI could begin with the untagged ports and tell neutron to use 1:1, then switch to tagged ports later w/a corresponding VLAN allocation later if I wanted, right?17:29
jamesdentonFor a POC you can get away with a single interface. In this case, I would recommend something like this AIO setup: https://gist.github.com/busterswt/340221d3623e98d42b224fc7da13143f17:30
jamesdentoni would use NIC2 for provider and vxlan networks, and leave NIC1 to mgmt/container if at all possible.17:31
jamesdentonYou'll notice 2 br-vlan stanzas - one builds the flat and one builds the vlan configs in the linuxbridge_agent.ini17:32
jamesdentonwhen you create the network in Neutron, create a 'flat' network using the 'flat' provider label. You can create VLANs, they just wont work17:32
openstackgerritAndy McCrae proposed openstack/openstack-ansible-os_neutron master: Allow only vxlan networks to be created in Neutron.  https://review.openstack.org/48742417:32
