smatzekmattt:  pong.  I got side tracked yesterday with some networking issues in our ceph cluster.  I've started a big refactor of the ceph_client role to allow multi-OS distro and multi-ceph source support.  I hope to get a WIP patch up later today.12:06

matttsmatzek: cool!  i created three work in progress reviews for using symlinks instead of python-cephlibs, but just realised that isn't going to work12:09
*** kylek3h has joined #openstack-ansible12:09
smatzekmattt:  Why won't it work?12:10
matttsmatzek: so infernalis onwards (i /think/) uses cython binds, so we'd need some crazy logic to determine what to symlink to etc.12:11
matttsmatzek: and of course this is going to be problematic as we add support for centos etc.12:11
openstackgerritMerged openstack/openstack-ansible-galera_server: Use the apt_package_pinning role  https://review.openstack.org/31102112:11
matttsmatzek: perhaps the best option is when using ceph is to allow the venv to access site-packages on the host12:12
odyssey4memattt leave CentOS support off the table - focus rather on just Ubuntu 14.04/16.04 support12:12
odyssey4memattt but that brings the urllib/requests package dirtiness into play12:13
matttodyssey4me: well even then it's too complicated, because we ultimately have no idea what version of ceph someone is installing12:13
*** markvoelker has joined #openstack-ansible12:14
odyssey4meso how about this - if you're using UCA then it goes in a known place - right? if you're using the ceph packages then it also goes into a known place - then for each version it may differ but it's always consistent with major versions12:14
odyssey4meso if it goes into the same dict as a value for each source and version then it's simple enough to implement12:14
matttodyssey4me: sure but you still have this matrix of things to have to manage, it's brittle and not ideal12:15
odyssey4mewell, we only care about a limited set of things per series - so while it's a pain, that's the price we pay for carrying the role12:15
smatzekmattt:  not ideal but maybe the lesser evil?12:15
odyssey4mean alternative is to try and have the client install stuff handled in ansible-ceph and for us to simply consume that role there... then that project which knows better can carry that burden12:16
matttsmatzek: so another thing we could do which is also dirty is install the python-rados, python-rbd, etc. packages into the venv itself12:16
*** maestro has joined #openstack-ansible12:16
odyssey4memattt hmm, install them without deps?12:16
matttodyssey4me: yeah, exactly12:17
odyssey4menow that actually sounds like a smart idea12:17
matttonly problem i ran into doing that is the venv's python path doesn't recognize the path the python bits are installed to inside the venv12:17
matttso it would need to get updated12:17
odyssey4meyou might have to install with deps onto the system, and without deps into the venv - that way any dependent c libs would also be installed12:17
matttother issue there is i have no idea how updates to python-rados etc. would be handled in the venv12:18
*** psilvad has joined #openstack-ansible12:18
matttsmatzek: you any good w/ python?  :)12:19
matttlast option (but probably the best) is to help drive ceph to get this stuff into pypi12:19
odyssey4meit kinda sounds to me like the venv linking might be the best approach then - with a dict relating each known version to a known location12:19
odyssey4meif it's in a git source, can't we build a wheel ourselves?12:20
smatzekmattt:  I've been coding python for 3.5 years, but haven't dug into the impl details of venvs.12:20
matttodyssey4me: this is also where my python knowledge falls down12:21
matttodyssey4me: so infernalis onwards uses cython, can you bundle that stuff in a wheel?12:21
smatzekmattt: I think there would be a bit of an issue with getting it into pypi.  You probably need ceph and Canoncial to both get their versions into PyPi, if Canonical carries any differences.  AND you'd need them to do it for the various Ceph releases, THEN you'd need to know which one to install.12:21
matttsmatzek: yeah it's not straight-forward :(12:22
matttwhich also discounts building the wheel locally12:23
*** spotz is now known as spotz_zzz12:23

There are 76 connections being held open and 120 threads and it's consuming a rediculous amount of memory. The next worst offender is rabbitmq with 77 threads and then mongodb with 70. The total combined memory usage has grown from around 4gb of ram to almost 8gb and 2.5 swap!14:44

jmccrorylooks like it was all moved to vars in test.yml https://github.com/openstack/openstack-ansible-rabbitmq_server/blob/master/tests/test.yml#L35-L38, right now multidistro review doesn't actually seem to be testing an upgrade either15:53
logan-stevelle: gnocchi looks interesting.. I haven't looked at it before but I guess using ceph backend would be easy to make the service HA. will have to dig into the query language sometime :)15:55

smatzekodyssey4me, mattt.  After giving it more thought I think having OSA manage the a dict of links keyed off of ceph source and version.  Something like this http://paste.openstack.org/show/496355/  Though I'm not an venv expert.  It seems like its the least amount of management necessary from OSA (versus building pypi modules for all these combos, and then we'd still need to manage which one to install). Thoughts?16:12
