odyssey4meadmin0 http://docs.openstack.org/image-guide/obtain-images.html10:01
odyssey4meadmin0 there is another part in that guide which gives advice for building your own images10:01
matttevrardjp: do we still need this?  https://review.openstack.org/#/c/280822/10:01
admin0http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/wily/current/ — there is no qcow it seems10:02
evrardjpgood question mattt10:02
evrardjpfor now, we don't10:02
evrardjpnothing prevents another issue @galaxy10:02
odyssey4meadmin0 the .img files are qcow2 I think10:02
matttevrardjp: so sounds like we may as well just merge that in then right?10:03
odyssey4meeither that or raw, and you can convert to qcow easily enough10:03
evrardjpI think we can drop the case, but maybe we should follow Nolan's proposition10:03
matttevrardjp: ah, fallback url sounds sensible10:03
matttevrardjp: ok, do you want to abandon and we can reopen if necessary?10:03
evrardjpI think that's best10:04
evrardjpto still have a reference of this somewhere, but continue the way it should10:04
evrardjpI'll abandon it10:04
evrardjpeverybody ok with that?10:04
mattti guess for now, the question is which service is least reliable?10:05
mattti'm sadly inclined to say github :(10:05
matttbut i've not used galaxy far as much as github, so that may be an unfair statement10:06
evrardjpfor me: galaxy clone of github < github repos < openstack repos10:06
matttevrardjp: i'm happy, and if we see this again we flip to github for good10:06
admin0is container format bare or raw for those images ?10:06
matttadmin0: bare i think10:06
odyssey4meso far we have more failures coming from the galaxy api than we do from github :/10:06
admin0matt: thanks10:07
matttodyssey4me: really?  then we should keep evrardjp's commit10:07
evrardjpmattt: there is a huge advantage to switching to galaxy for all the openstack roles: with all the CI we are using, our roles are gonna be the first to appear on galaxy web page, which helps for lobbying features :D10:07
odyssey4menote also that I think the galaxy api just facilitates a git clone from the source repo anyway10:07
evrardjp(just a supposition)10:07
evrardjpodyssey4me: yes, a clone, and stats, and a web page... not really useful10:08
odyssey4meevrardjp how do you mean? ah, in terms of tracking downloads?10:08
evrardjpbut it's the first stop for ansible users10:08
evrardjpodyssey4me: yup10:08
odyssey4meaha, that is a good point10:08
odyssey4mewe haven't had that many failures though - this was the first multi day failure10:08
evrardjpwhat would be best, is to push to fallback url to openstack repos, and have all in galaxy10:09
odyssey4meyes, except that ansible-galaxy doesn't support a fallback URL, does it?10:09
evrardjpI meant: having the fallback urls, then adapting our ansible-role-requirements to openstack's cgit, and keep all the first downloads with galaxy10:10
odyssey4meso we'd have to wrap it10:10

odyssey4meAndrew__ that doesn't sound too bad, especially for the number of containers that need to come up and initialise12:14
odyssey4meAndrew__ I expect that using SSD's, more memory, faster processors, etc would help12:14
odyssey4meAndrew__ however, if there are optimisations that could be made in the deployment, I'd be happy to see reviews!12:15
Andrew__odyssey4me: I understand, re-initialization of about 9 "auto" network devices take time. I was just wondering whether anyone have found a way to speed up the process :)12:15
Andrew__odyssey4me: sorry, some context here, i have 9 "auto" network interfaces in my setup12:17
odyssey4meah, now that's different12:18
odyssey4meI expect that they could be changed to use a forced speed/duplex - and if your uding teaming/bonding then you'd have to do some things on your switches to reduce their init time, if it's even possible.12:19

odyssey4meperhaps you have more than one device expected in cloud-init, but not in the instance booted?12:50

logan-Andrew__: hopefully it will help. I haven't looked into the root problem of why upstart thinks there is not a "full network configuration" yet or how it determines that, but I see it often on metal hosts with only 2 interfaces (no bridges etc) in a bonded config13:00
*** asettle has joined #openstack-ansible13:00
*** raddaoui has quit IRC13:01
odyssey4meyeah, the bonding takes some time to negotiate - intentionally, because it has to negotiate the algorithm, etc13:01
odyssey4methat's between the OS, drivers, NIC's and the switch13:01
logan-except it is already negotiated because the bond has to be online for these systems to download the rootfs where upstart came from :)13:01
logan-and also they are pinging the whole time13:02
odyssey4melogan- you managed to make it bond through pxe?13:02
logan-yes13:02
odyssey4mewow, that's not something I've seen before :)13:02
logan-http://paste.gentoolinux.info/elatetowel.sm13:03
odyssey4mewhen I built & operated a public cloud a few years back, that wasn't possible as far as we could find - we had to do the initial pxe boot through a default network fallback configured on the switches13:03
logan-example cmdline13:03
odyssey4meah, so the initial pxe connection is still a single NIC, then the initrd bonds13:04
logan-right, pxe doesnt have a bond.. initramfs configures it13:04
*** markvoelker has joined #openstack-ansible13:04

automagicallyIf there is interest in adding cores from outside Rackspace, might be nice to put together something like: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Heat/CoreTeam17:39
*** woodard has joined #openstack-ansible17:40
matttwe need more cores!17:40
spotzdocs team do something similar as well17:40
mattti'd love to see more cores, especially from outside of rackspace17:41
matttbut will be thankful for anyone inside also :)17:41
spotzmattt hehehe17:41
automagicallymattt: Both Comcast and Walmart have several employees with pretty active participation. No doubt other orgs as well17:42
automagicallyPerhaps a good topic for the next Thursday meeting is to discuss how to get more cores17:42
matttyeah17:43
matttautomagically: good idea17:43
matttand if anyone is interested, please let us know17:43
spotzI think it was mainly RackSpace as that's where it originated and just moved out to openstack.org in the last 6 months17:44

automagicallyAs a new and more frequent contributor, I think it would be helpful for folks like myself to see something like https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Heat/CoreTeam#Membership_Expectations from the existing cores17:46

*** dweaver has joined #openstack-ansible17:46
automagicallymattt: Just lack of bandwidth for the project?17:46
matttautomagically: we have cores who come in and out of the project as they get assigned to different tasks17:47
automagicallyAh, makes some sense17:47
matttautomagically: so i'm not sure i'd want to put #s on what you'd need to do to be/remain core17:47
automagicallyYeah, I found the Heat team’s statement a bit overly rigorous17:48
automagicallyWith respect to the emphasis on review “quota"17:48
matttyeah, i think we can be much more fluid on being a core17:48

pabelangerI _might_ have the need to use your pip_install role, but I need to make some changes if possible. For me, I don't need to download pip and install it, I'd rather just consume the version in the distro OS.  So, I have some refactoring I am working on locally, but most of a heads up I might push up something later next week to get some comments on the changes18:40
pabelangerbascially, exposing the ability for the user to decide where to install pip from.  Example, packaging, pypi or url (like today)18:41

sigmavirus24pabelanger: I'll be interested in seeing that.18:49
sigmavirus24We have a strict need to get it from the PyPA/PyPI directly because of our dependency on a modern pip/wheel/setuptools configuration18:50
sigmavirus24And those packages in a typical distro are ... well, lacking18:50

pabelangersigmavirus24: Ya, right now I don't do much with pip, I can get away with the version in epel-release for the most part.  My main goals are to rely on system packaging for most things controlled by ansible.  So I suspect I by pass a lot of those issue because packagers deal with it18:54
sigmavirus24pabelanger: right, if you're using system packaging for services, and other openstack things, then you will bypass that18:56
