mattmceuenOk, let's get started16:05
levmorgano/16:05
mattmceuen#topic Season of Docs16:05
*** openstack changes topic to "Season of Docs (Meeting topic: airship)"16:05
mattmceuenLast week we'd brought up that Google is running a Season of Docs program, which pairs open source orgs who need documentation help with technical writers in a quasi-internship capacity16:05
mattmceuenI'd like for Airship to apply for this program, and to do so we need some compelling examples of projects that writers could work on16:06
mattmceuenNow that we've had a week for the idea to soak, let's brainstorm a bit -- things that would add real value for Airship in the Fall timeframe, and which would be really interesting for a tech writer16:07
mattmceuenI put a few ideas in the etherpad https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/airship-meeting-2019-04-0216:07
shauno_I would suggest starting with a clear reference architecture.16:07
mattmceuen+116:07
mattmceuenWe have some good diagrams already, but Airship has been a moving target and I think there's an opportunity to true those up, expand them, and then (most importantly) tell a story around them of what makes airship tick16:09
shauno_+116:09
shauno_Anything that make getting a clear understanding and baseline would help people get started16:09
mattmceuenAnother thought I'd had is a real Contributor Guide.  I was looking into Go's contributor guide this weekend, and it really outlines a lot of steps to help people get started and contribute.  We're working on enhancing Dev Docs today, but it'll take additional technical writing focus to get to that level of getting folks started on the right foot16:10
mattmceuenAnother thing that just popped in my mind is "how does one add a new workload onto Airship" -- we really have no documentation in this area.  Fits into a larger need of "how do I author site manifests for Airship"16:12
mattmceuenWe have some site authoring guidage today, but there's a lot more that can be documented16:12
shauno_Are you talking about additional non-OpenStack workloads? i.e. K8's native?16:13
sthusseyThat should be the case as Airship only supports Kubernetes native workloads16:13
mattmceuenYep, if someone wanted to run a workload other than openstack itself.   For example, the team had to go through this to get jenkins running on Airship - there's tribal knowledge on how to do this but we need written knowledge16:14
mattmceuenIt's not rocket science, just needs some description16:14
sthusseyI mean, there are lots of examples16:14
sthusseyUnless you mean 'charts that don't use helm-toolkit' as LMA isn't Openstack16:14
sthusseySo maybe the use case should specifically be for deploying charts from https://github.com/helm/charts16:15
mattmceuenWhat I'm thinking is, outlining the steps involved in adding a new chart.  What do I need to add, what do I need to edit16:15
mattmceuenI like that sthussey16:15
mattmceuenAny other ideas you guys have for what would benefit the most from pen-to-paper?16:16
shauno_Within the contributor guide, a blueprint mechanism could be helpful (I am assuming there isn't one)16:17
mattmceuenAgree.  Outlining Airship's approach to Stories + Specs + Code Changes16:18
shauno_+116:18
mattmceuenwe still have plenty of time before the submission deadline, so keep noodling; I won't have time this week to start on the application anyway :)16:19
mattmceuenanything else on this before we move on?16:19

seaneaganthanks Matt16:23
seaneaganComing Soon: Armada v2 docs16:23
seaneaganWe need to make some breaking changes to Armada documents to:16:24
seaneagan1) remove unuseful APIs16:24
seaneagan2) tweak some APIs to make them more useful16:24
seaneaganTo address this, rather than breaking v1 docs, we are implementing v2 doc schemas:16:24
seaneaganarmada/Manifest/v2, armada/ChartGroup/v2, armada/Chart/v216:24
seaneaganWIP: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/648246/16:24
seaneaganv2 docs are not ready to be used just yet16:25
seaneaganthere are a few more breaking changes to be discussed/implemented16:25
seaneaganonce v2 docs are finalized, v1 docs will be deprecated, and will not receive feature updates16:25
seaneaganafter a TBD migration period support for v1 docs would be removed16:25
seaneaganthere will be a migration guide provided for moving from v1-v216:25
seaneaganwe will make another announcement once v2 docs are ready for consumption16:26
*** kranthikirang1 has quit IRC16:26
seaneaganOne of the biggest drivers for implementing this now is that we need to make some potentially breaking changes to the default wait configuration to make it more useful:16:26

kaspars__is this airship-treasuremap?20:30
kranthikiranghttp://paste.openstack.org/show/748739/ - deckhand-api logs20:32
kranthikirangkaspars__: yes, I am using upstream airship-treasuremap guidelines20:32
kranthikirangkaspars__: while running the command sudo -E airship-shipyard/tools/deckhand_load_yaml.sh ${NEW_SITE} ${NEW_SITE}_collected20:32
kaspars__is certificates.yaml part of the folder collected?20:33
kaspars__usually you would generate the certs and add them as part of your site secrets20:33
kranthikirangNEW_SITE/collected folder contains airship-treasuremap.yaml20:34
kaspars__https://github.com/openstack/airship-treasuremap/blob/master/site/airship-seaworthy/secrets/certificates/certificates.yaml20:34
kaspars__here this is the file that you would need to re-generate as it depends on hostnames, etc based on the document20:35
kaspars__this would then provide all the certificate substitutes, etc20:35
kranthikirangthe new site has this certificate.yaml20:35
kranthikirangairship-treasuremap/site/mtn21c/secrets/certificates/certificates.yaml20:35
kranthikiranghere my site name is mtn21c20:35
kaspars__right - and you generated it new, right?20:35
kaspars__it's not just copy from seaworthy site?20:35
kranthikirangit was before deploying genesis20:35
kranthikirangnope; its new20:36
kaspars__ok great! that sounds good20:36
kaspars__when you do colelct though20:36
kranthikirangcreated part of collectd20:36
kranthikirangyes20:36
kaspars__ok20:36
kaspars__if you open the airship-treasuremap.yaml - the collected one20:36
kaspars__can you search for one of the certifiactes, and see if it's there?20:37
kaspars__in other words.. the generated cert content should be part of that collected file as well20:38
kranthikirangin genesis?20:38
kaspars__kranthikirang> NEW_SITE/collected folder contains airship-treasuremap.yaml20:38
kaspars__inspect the conect of this file20:38
kaspars__see if expected erts are there20:38
kranthikirangyes; I see that doesn't have cert content20:38
kaspars__ok20:39
kaspars__now when you have added "airship-treasuremap/site/mtn21c/secrets/certificates/certificates.yaml"20:39
kaspars__as it looks in site20:39
kranthikirang{NEW_SITE}/bundle has certificate.yaml20:39
kaspars__you can re-run pegleg collect20:39
kaspars__it should now collect it once more including the certs (as they are now placed inside your repo, right? )20:39
kaspars__alternatively20:40
kaspars__you can copy certificates.yaml inside the collected folder20:40
kaspars__and run the push to shipyard again20:40
kranthikirangok;20:40
kranthikirangso you want me to run sudo airship-pegleg/tools/pegleg.sh site \20:40
kranthikirang  -r airship-treasuremap \20:40
kranthikirang  collect $NEW_SITE -s ${NEW_SITE}_collected20:40
kaspars__yep20:40
kranthikirangagain in build server and copy that dir to genesis again?20:40
kranthikirangok20:40
kaspars__yeah20:41
kaspars__no need to redo genesis20:41
kaspars__just collect with pegleg20:41
kaspars__copy files to genesis and push to shipyard20:41
kranthikirangok20:41
kaspars__(this would just include missing certs into the collected files)20:41
kranthikirangsounds good; Let me do that; This step is not in document20:41
kaspars__yeah - let me re-visit this20:41
kaspars__I think what ends up is that you need to recollect docs once you add certificatges.yaml inside of site20:42
kranthikirangkaspars__: My bad;20:44

jamesgu__Hello... a quick question... what is the typical interval for uplifting the versions in treasuremap? noticed the versions.yaml is about 12 days old.22:21
kranthikirangkaspars__: I am seeing only one validation error now; Can you give me a hint where to look for?22:29
kranthikirang"DD3003", "documents": []}, {"source": "Drydock", "diagnostic": null, "kind": "ValidationMessage", "message": "Error loading effective site: not enough arguments for format string", "level": "Error", "error": true, "name": null, "documents": []}]}, "metadata": {}, "code": "400 Bad Request", "apiVersion": "v1.0", "status": "Failure", "kind": "Status", "reason": "Validation", "message": "Validations failed"}22:29
kranthikirangI have adjusted the timeouts in shipyard configmap for now for deckhand; That didn't give any error now but shipyard client while running airship-shipyard/tools/deckhand_load_yaml.sh generated 502 Bad Gateway and 504 Bad Gateway errors (I believe that's also because of timeout). Not sure where to fine tune this (probably directly in shipyard_client python files). ;22:34
kranthikirangI guess we can ignore those errors and resolve the actual validation errors generated by deckhand and proceed? Correct me if I am wrong22:35

kaspars__@jamesgu normally we would uplift on daily bases (given there are changes in repos - which usually there are). I'm fixing now few things that prevents uplifts so it should soon become more frequent again. for more stable versions - please use tags/releases.23:10
kaspars__the automated airship-seaworthy pipelines does the uplift and runs full integration test before submitting uplift patchset.23:11
kaspars__@kranthikirang - yes, I think the timeouts were just distractions - real error is as you note in the validation section. agree, most likely in that file23:12
