mrhillsmanresource restriction or constrained?00:08
mrhillsmandefinitely did not deploy correctly i would say00:11
mrhillsmanREADME is pretty straight forward but it is simply not working? the requirements of the VM to deploy on is in the script and it passes; so not really sure at this point on the resolution other than digging into the code to figure it out which seems to require some knowledge of most of the components?00:12

mark-burnettHi all14:02

mark-burnettHere's the very empty etherpad for today: https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/airship-meeting-2018-12-1114:02
dwalto/14:02
mattmceuendwalt I'm on mobile for few mins so no easy access to etherpad- could you share a status update on the airskiff gates, where they are, where they're going?14:05
evrardjpnice agenda14:05
dwaltAbsolutely!14:07
dwaltNow that Airskiff has been integrated in the Treasuremap repository as a site, we have added several gates. Two of which lint each site (Airship-Seaworthy, Airskiff), and one that deploys a couple of components (i.e memcached) using the Airship components deployed during the Airskiff setup process. We’re going through the next phase right now of adding that Treasuremap gate as a non-voting job to each component’s14:11
dwaltrepository that is represented in Airskiff.14:11
dwaltAdditionally, we are trying to reduce the size of the Airskiff site. There are a lot of extra files that were inherited from the Seaworthy site that are ignored when deploying Airskiff14:12
mattmceuenso the airskiff gate *in treasuremap* today -- what does it gate on?  Any changes to treasuremap, or something more specific?14:14
dwaltGreat question. Because it deploys the whole site using the developer setup scripts, any changes to those scripts or the Airskiff site documents are gated14:15
dwaltAdditionally, we build all of the Airship components from source. So they are sort of verified on each run14:16
mattmceuengotcha.   How long does the full gate run take in openstack infra?14:16
dwaltIt’s about an hour at the present time. While we are looking at ways to reduce the time (e.g. exploring minikube for K8s), the priority is still to represent this job in the other Airship components first14:18
mattmceuenmakes sense.  If we're building the airship components {pegleg, armada, shipyard, deckhand} from source as part of the gate, would it speed things up to only build the project being tested, and pull the curent built images for the rest?14:19
dwaltThat’s another idea that’s also been tossed around a bit. That is another thing I am hoping to accomplish once the gate runs for the other Airship repositories14:21
mattmceuenawesome14:21
dwaltRight now, Treasuremap is sort of serving as an integration point14:21
dwaltFor those interested, we also have a roadmap on the Treasuremap storyboard14:22
mattmceuenthanks for your work on that - it'll be really valuable getting some gating on every patch :)14:22
mattmceuenlink to storyboard?14:22
dwalthttps://storyboard.openstack.org/#!/project/openstack/airship-treasuremap14:23

sthusseyIs there an actual question or subject regard AIAB that needs discussion?14:29
sthusseyregarding*14:29
b-strI added what I know about efforts to move it forward to the etherpad.14:30
portdirectthats great b-str14:30
portdirectthe question is more around what we do to try and get us in a situation where it works all the time14:31
portdirectdo we have capacity to put some cicd around it?14:31
portdirector a community goal to keep it healty14:31
portdirectas its the entrypoint for most people into airship, its very important that their first experence is a good one.14:32
mattmceuen+114:32
sthusseySeems the largest hurdle is 3rd party CI doesn't have a method for publishing logs14:33
b-strThere is an AIAB pipeline that runs (internally) but it doesn't gate, and doesn't publish results publicly.14:33
sthusseySo all the results are silent due to OSF rules that 3rd party CI must publicly publish results14:33
mattmceuenSubstantial "doesn't work on my machine" feedback on ML and otherwise -- part of that is  system requirements, part of that is occasionally something is broken14:33
mattmceuenWas about to say - can we publish the results :)14:34
mark-burnettI feel like we're onto rehashing old topics here14:34
mattmceuenk, what was the outcome of that one mark-burnett14:34
mark-burnettWe've discussed our inability to publish 3rd party gate results a number of times in this forum14:34
b-strOne ML request was to reduce the memory requirement, which we've known since June or so, but no substantial changes have happened since then on this topic.14:35
mark-burnettThe outcome is simply that the team responsible doesn't have the bandwidth to push that forward right now14:35
mattmceuenSure, bandwidth aside - I wouldn't phrase that inability, just opportunity14:36
mattmceuen"when" not "if"14:36
portdirectok - I'll see if i can help on the publishing issue14:37
portdirecti may have some levers i can pull14:37
portdirectthough would probably be after christmas14:37
sthusseyDid we ever get clarity on how Ironic or Triple-O does gating of the full platform? I've heard two stories around that - one is 3rd party gates and the other is they have worked zuul magic.14:37
mattmceuenty portdirect :)14:37
portdirectironic - just uses zuul and nodepool as per everyone else14:38
portdirecttriple-o uses zuul and nodepool, though with some deadicated hardware if i rememeber correctly14:38
sthusseyOkay14:39
portdirectthough as we are not 'openstack' we can use third party gates however we like as far as im aware14:39
sthusseyI was just looking at Ironic PS and it seems like they have vendor gates14:39
portdirectso should have no limitations14:39
mark-burnettYeah, they have pretty significant 3rd party gates, iirc14:39
portdirectironic has third party gates, but do not rely upon them14:39
portdirectthe core implementation only requires vbmc to run14:39
portdirectthis is how we gate it in osh14:40
portdirectso you may want to check that for somthing that would plug neatly into airskiff14:41
mark-burnettOk, sounds like we're basically done14:42
mark-burnettThanks for coming everyone!14:42

mattmceuenHey c6 sorry, didn't get a chance to answer your question before the meeting kicked in :)14:46
mattmceuenThe team put a lot of work into reducing the memory footprint of airship-in-a-bottle, and there may be more opportunity to squeeze it down as time goes on.  But at the end of the day it is quite a bit of software for a VM, so unfortunately it is what it is at the moment.  Just need a somewhat beefy laptop to run it today14:48
*** krypto has joined #airshipit14:48
mattmceuenIf you leave out the components that do the bare metal provisioning, though, it saves a bit of space -- take a look at airskiff:14:49
mattmceuenhttps://airship-treasuremap.readthedocs.io/en/latest/airskiff.html14:49
mattmceuenjust the software deployment components (no Promenade or Drydock or bare metal  provisioning), it's a good way to get started on the rest with much less ram.  @dwalt do you have an idea of RAM requirements?14:49
dwaltmattmceuen: I think I missed the original question, but I have success running Airskiff using the deployment scripts on a machine with 8 GB of RAM. IIRC, the gates have a similar hardware limitation.14:56

mattmceuenhey mrhillsman - sorry, off work today and a bit touch and go :)  I'd say it depends on what you're trying to get experience with.  If you're interested in getting your feet wet with deployment of software (e.g. openstack), helm charts, and the YAML manifest format, then slimmed down airskiff is a good fit.  Also a good fit for local testing if you're a developer working on those particular airship components.23:58
mattmceuenIf you're interested in a demo of the full stack - that's really what airship in a bottle is, and as such it's more resource intensive.23:58
mattmceuenif you're ready to design a full multinode lab, then the airship-seaworthy site manifests that live in the treasuremap repo are a good place to copy / modify23:59
mrhillsmani am using a dedicated node so no worries about resource constraint23:59
